He wakes up to the sound of her singing in the kitchen. With a smile, he dresses, pulls the bed together and, joins her. Standing in the doorway, he watches her as she danced around the small space singing “My Life’s by Billy Joel. Perfect, he thinks. She stops suddenly when she turns and sees him.
“Oh God, I didn’t know you were there. Sorry I like to sing when I cook. I know I am horrible at it.” He pulls a face.
“Who told you such? You are not.”
“Frank he would complain about the racket.” Under his breath, he softly curses.
“He was a cruel fool. I quite enjoyed your racket. Was nice to wake up to.”
“I figured you would be hungry. Hope you don’t mind me taken over the kitchen.”
“Not at all. This is your place also.” They sit down to eat. “I need to take you to get work boots and gloves today.” She swallows and nods.
“I will pay you back for whatever..”
He starts to wave her off but understands her pride needs this. “Of course. No problem. I will try to give you a good overview of what is expected.”
“Yes please do.”
“All start out unloading lorries. It must be done fast but safe. If you have any trouble lifting a box, don’t try to play hero. Get help. We practice teamwork.”
“Understand.”
“We do it fast to get the drivers back out there. They get a bonus based on their amount of deliveries. We honor them by helping them get them.”
“Makes sense.”
“They are stacked on pallets and the fork lift driver carries them off and brings another pallet. We strive to keep that flowing smooth so when he returns from delivering the one pallet, another should be waiting on him. Now most boxes come off the lorries the same size. They are stacked no more then three high. If, for some reason, they are of various sizes, then the biggest goes on first. Still no more then three high. We would rather have more pallets and less risk of injury.”
“Understand. So grab, stack, grab.”
“Aye basically. Lift with your legs never your back. Please Claire, I can’t stress this enough, don’t try to do more then you can.”
“I won’t. Promise. You know that we can only be coworkers there. I don’t want them thinking I got the job because we are together.”
“They won’t.”
“Jamie, I know how this works. The re- assigned lady, with no previous work history comes in. They will already be thinking, wondering. I don’t want to give them more ammunition. I will be working there awhile. It would be nice to be accepted. At least, for a bit, we need to keep this just between us. Please.”
“You are very smart. I will. We will be us here and strictly Jamie and Claire at work.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” He stands, gathers up the dishes, and carries them over to the sink. He starts washing them.
