My favourite genre of World Heritage Post will always be the ones that essentially changed the vocabulary and/or trajectory of the website, but it did it without even breaking 100k notes. For example, that True Story Post about the Homestuck update where police was called and the officer immediately began reading it when they told him? That post didn't even break 60k notes, but we all remember it, at least those of us who were here. There aren't a whole lot of these particular World Heritage Posts, in fact they're for sure the rarest type, but they do exist, and they did leave an undying mark on this site - and I think that's beautiful, actually.
Lads....it finally happened. Allow me to prefix this by saying that i am almost 46 years old and have a very corporate, grown up accounting job.
Today, i was chatting to a lovely lady (never met her beforen no idea which department) in the communal work kitchen whilst we both made our respective cuppas, and she said "oh, i like your shoelaces". Without hesitation, like some ancient, cursed sleeper agent, i replied with "thanks, i stole them from the President." We then stared at each other in awkward silence, the abject horror at what had just come out of my mouth written all over my face, before she politely wished me a good day and huriedly left. I've been on the hellsite for 14 fucking years and thats the first time thats happened to me out in the wild.

Behold hellsite users, the Tumblr hall of fame!! Featuring the best of the best posts I've acumulated over the years.
Funny, wholesome, but mostly dumb as fuck, these posts are all you could ever dream of! Enter if you dare..
The concept of a “real version” of internet content is so interesting to me.
irl museums feel special. Your “This is the real Starry Night” moment feels significant, certainly more significant than just googling the Starry Night and finding the first thing off Google. You already know what the Starry Night looks like before seeing it in the museum. But there’s a certain power to knowing this is the original. Van Gogh crafted *this* with his own hands and people have been admiring *this* for hundreds of years. It’s just special.
It’s the same kind of feeling with World Heritage tumblr posts. Comments like “This is a legendary post, I’ve only seen this in screenshots” are very common. It feels more real than just seeing it screenshotted or copied. It feels like a real piece of tumblr history. It’s wild to realize the original version of the post is still kicking around the internet in its original form.
But it’s not. It’s just a server sharing a copy of the original data and an app rendering it for you. Same process as if you looked it up yourself. Nearly the same process as if you found a screenshot. It might not even be stored on the same physical server as the original upload, depending on how they’ve done maintenance over the years and how many backups they store. The version in front of you is no more real than the screenshots you’ve seen.
Except isn’t it??
