About Shane introducing himself in Regina at the 2008 world juniors when they were both 17.

He sought Ilya out specifically in a situation where it would be just the two of them. Ilya had slipped out for a quiet smoke by himself, and Shane tracked him down, and decided that would be a great moment to introduce himself. Not when Ilya was with his teammates, not when Shane was with his own teammates, just the two of them.

Shane must have been watching Ilya (and specifically him) to notice him leave the arena by himself. And then it seems like Shane followed him. I doubt Shane just happened to be walking past there all by himself and just happened to see Ilya standing out there all by himself. It wasn’t just a coincidence that they met that way, I strongly suspect.

Not that I think Shane ever consciously REALIZED he was engineering a situation where he could talk to Ilya with nobody else around. But I think he was definitely already intrigued by Ilya. Maybe it was watching game film of him skate, maybe it was his looks, maybe both. But for reasons I’m sure Shane didn’t understand himself at the time, he sought Ilya out at world juniors.

Even though Shane has anxiety and struggles with many social interactions, he went to considerable effort to initiate a social interaction with this other young prospect. Privately. And then shook his hand twice in a very short conversation.

an: hi i didn’t know what to put for the summary. i wrote this at 4-6 am for literally no reason.. so i apologize in advance if it doesn’t make sense. idk i can’t decide if i like this at all but.. f it we ball. also ik this one is kinda different, but i couldn’t pass up an idea. lmk what you think, the comments i get are why i keep writing !! hope your day was extra lovely !!

“why’s hockey on? it’s like.. noon.”

you asked your dad as you walked out of the kitchen. bright saturday sunlight slanted through the blinds, making it so you had to squint to see the screen.

“what, kiddo?”

he slowly turned his head towards you, his eyes still on the screen. you’d gotten used to this over the years. you never were going to get his full attention if espn was open.

“i asked why there’s live hockey at noon.”

“uh huh.”

“right. cool.”

you mumbled, plopping down on the couch next to him with your bagel you’d made yourself in hand.

the first thing you noticed was that this wasn’t an nhl game. the formatting was all wrong. that, and you were currently seeing a bunch of… teenagers in america’s colors?

“dad, what are we watching? minors?”

“what? no.”

“okay..?”

“world juniors.”

you gave up trying to figure out what he was talking about, and just tried to pay attention, try to catch up on the first eleven minutes you’d missed. it wasn’t long before you were just as zoned in as he was.

as you tracked the players in red, white, and blue across the screen, you spotted something familiar.

smith.

the corner of your lips tugged upwards just a bit, the reminder of the boy in your history class making your chest feel a little warm. you brushed it off, assuming that it was simply a coincidence, like any rational person would probably assume.

you moved on, watched team usa win their game. you were chatting with your dad about a play that had caught his eye, but suddenly you fell quiet.

the camera had panned to the players as they shook hands.

normally, this never would’ve caught your eye, and really it wasn’t even the handshaking that got you; it was the lack of helmets.

it was the fact that you were now seeing something that couldn’t quite be possible.

“no fucking way.”

“uhm, language??”

“no, dad, like seriously. there’s no way.”

“what are you on about?”

you just stared at the television, jaw dropped. your dads questioning fell on deaf ears.

because there he was. smith, a 43 on his back, without his helmet on, his blond hair a complete mess. he had this uncharacteristically serious face on, focused in a way he never seemed to be in class. the sight of it made your heart do embarrassing things against your ribcage.

“i know him. oh my god.”

your dad looked over at you, making a face like he didn’t believe you at all.

“you sure?”

“like, i swear on everything good in my life, i know him.”

“yeah, okay, and i go way back with mark messier.”

a week passed. then two. then three.

will wasn’t in history class for a single day for nearly the entire month of may, as one would expect from someone who was currently too busy competing in germany.

you and your dad continued to watch every game over the course of the month, even the ones at ridiculous hours of the day. you even got to skip school to watch the finals, since they were at the ass crack of dawn for whatever reason.

your dad watched the team win silver.

you watched will win silver.

“look what the cat dragged in.”

“ew, man, shut the hell up. who even says that?”

“hey, man. good seein’ ya, too.”

you turned in your seat to find the spot behind you filled for the first time since early april. will was chatting with his friend, first about how much he’d missed, then about why he had missed.

you couldn’t contain yourself any longer.

“will.”

he blinked, eyes snapping towards you. he looked surprised for a second, but then an easy smile spread across his face.

“‘sup?”

“why were you on my tv?”

he clearly hadn’t been expecting that. he started laughing, scrunching his nose a little. you couldn’t help but join in, just a tad quieter.

“uhm… sorry?”

“nah, it was kinda cool. just a month’s worth of games spent trying to convince my dad i knew you. he keeps calling me a liar.”

“that’s my bad.”

“guess it is.”

neither of you spoke for a moment, and for a second you fully thought he’d turn back to his friend. but he didn’t. he just watched you, tilting his head to the side.

“you and your dad watched?”

your cheeks heated up. you just stared at him for a beat, buffering.

shit, why did i say that?

“when did i say that?”

you tried to laugh it off.

“just now..?”

”i so did not say that.”

“no, yeah, i think you did.”

he grinned, leaning back in his seat. it was a different sort of smile from him, one you never saw. he almost looked smug, almost a hint too proud of himself. the look made your stomach flip over pleasantly.

“oh. i mean.. yeah. we did watch.”

“hmm.”

“what?”

“nothing.”

you gave him a flat look, opening your mouth to try to drag a real response from him. unfortuantely, your teacher chose exactly that moment to step to the front of the classroom and start rambling on about the ap exam in two days.

you didn’t pay much attention. you were still slightly angled towards him, both of you leaning towards each other enough that you could easily have continued speaking.

“yeah, you’re fucked for the exam, by the way.”

you whispered, before finally turning back around. there was silence from behind you for a few beats. you assumed you were going to get ignored.

“thanks for the heads up.”

“mhm, i gotchu.”

“i know.”

“whaddya mean, ‘i know’?”

“i know, ‘cause you’re a loyal fan.”

“go to hell.”

“yep.”

“that’s why you won silver.”

you regretted the words as soon as you said them. you squeezed your eyes shut, regret and guilt flooding your bones.

the silence from behind you really wasn’t helping. you couldn’t even glance back to see his reaction.

“damn. alright.”

“i’m sorry, i didn’t-“

“shh. trying to pay attention. could you not?”

the mocking in his tone was unmistakeable. he pitched his voice up in a way you immediately realized was supposed to be an impression of you.

you sighed quietly, nodding. you were just about to start planning how to make sure he didn’t hate you, when you heard a breath of a laugh, like he was trying to not find it funny.

“i deserved that.”

“yep.”

no one ever talks about this duo so LET ME START. they played together at world juniors in 2005 when they were like 18/19 years old both brand new to the league and every competition after they were on the same line. in 2006 they both played at mens worlds and HAD THE MOST POINTS OUT OF ANYONE my perfect babies. 2010 rolls around and bergy is hurt so he’s the 13th forward but 2016 WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY do not get me started on the 2016 world cup of hockey. one of the highest producing pairs in canadian hockey in the 2000s/2010s AND NO ONE IS TALKING ABT THEM and then four nations happens and sidney crosby walks up saying ‘there’s our centerman 😄’ even though they had not played together for NINE YEARS and they share the biggest hug and SOMEONE calls the other one baby and I have more thoughts on this. imagine being 18/19 years old and being shipped off to god knows where to play for your country and you find someone you click with and then you go home and don’t get to play with them again until the fates align and either worlds works or the olympics or some competition and they will never play on the same international team again and OUCH
