there's something kind of you-can't-go-home-again about being a hockey fan in terms of, like, your "first" roster is always going to be "your" roster, no matter how long ago it was or how many people have been swapped around, how many trades, how many retirements, how many free agencies you live through. it'll never be exactly like that again. it probably wasn't even exactly like that for a full season. i know there's a lot of jokes about "how do athletes deal with trades. what about their friends?" but it's also, like, what about us? what about our friends? to me, the penguins are always going to be, like, brian boyle and jason zucker and brian dumoulin and evan rodrigues and john marino, but for other people, the penguins go back even further than that. hags and horny and nealer and flower. you don't have to go too far down on reddit to find people who think about mario and jagr. i was a fairweather bandwagon fan for the avs when they won the cup and that exact lineup holds its shape in my mind perfectly, but talk to someone who follows the team for real and they have a tyson jost-shaped hole in their picture of the cup team that's still not healed over. i just love that. the inherent melancholia of being a sports fan is not knowing you're in the good ol' days when you're in them and then trade deadline comes. and the trade deadline comes every year.
SEPARATE CHURCH (AO3) AND STATE (TRADPUB)
You gotta be really publicly passionate about things if you want your friends to text you. Bc people will forget to text you because they’re human. But if you’re really openly the friend who loves identifying ants your friends will think of you when they see ants. And they’ll text you “what ant is this [blurry photo]”. And then they’ll ask you how you’ve been and we should get coffee sometime. But if they don’t know what you love they’ll never know what you like

at the end of the day, they would find each other at the beach, in every life. no matter trades or injuries or retirements or international hockey or nhl or anything.
I was thinking very deeply about the fact that it is canon that bergy stayed at marchys house before the 2016 WCH and the implications of that

having a best friend who meets your level of freak is unmatched. you present them with the most unhinged, deeply buried thought from the depths of your psyche and instead of blinking blankly they just go "oh absolutely"—and I think that mutual brain rot like that is the highest form of intimacy actually.
when you are little, you are handed a stuffed animal to make you stop crying. to make you laugh. to have as your own. it follows you everywhere, it is your best friend and your pillow. it knows all your secrets and has soaked up all your tears. as you age, those stuffed animals go into a box. they sit on a shelf. you don’t get handed one when you cry or for your birthday or when you do well or you don’t beg your mom to take you to the store to buy one with your extra pocket money. you grow up and you learn to be strong. to not let those emotions show. to handle yourself when everyone expects you to. your comfort quickly becomes other people. coping mechanisms. avoidance. humour to hide the pain or embarrassment or shame or loss. until you are standing in front of the entire world with a label around your neck that brands you as ‘not good enough’ ‘not strong enough’ not fast enough’ ‘not enough.’ and all of a sudden those coping mechanisms are unavailable to you. you can’t laugh this one off in the moment. you can’t run and hide. you can’t blame someone else. the entire world is staring at you with disappointment and sadness and anger and shame and you just have to stand there and take it. all of a sudden you are the eight year old kid who didn’t make the team. you are the six year old kid who skinned his knee on the playground. you are the twelve year old kid who told the pretty girl that you liked her and she laughed. and all of a sudden, they hand you a stuffed animal. and in that moment, you are 30. you are standing beside your heroes and peers. you are wearing your country’s colours and a silver medal and they handed you a stuffed animal. and you stare at it because you remember all your childhood stuffed animals. would they be proud of you?
