Just a little personal side note, I finished my final English class in college in a 4-week long accelerated course and somehow managed to get a 100% on a paper I wrote about lesbian poetry.

For the record—I NEVER recommend taking an English class in four weeks. Ever. Learn from my mistakes. However, I was somehow able to pull an A in the class. 😅

Now for a 4 week Sociology class that begins today. My masochism knows no bounds.

so in The Inferno the punishment for the usurers is to have a heavy purse around their necks that drags them down and last year when we read Crime and Punishment (after we’d finished the inferno) and got to the part where Alyona, the pawnbroker and a terrible usurer, is murdered one of my students goes “she has a purse around her neck like the usurers in hell” and i SCREAMED loudly in excitement

Ultimately, our (at that time) small library on Capitol Hill was successful in obtaining a second world-class collection due to a combination of building long-term relationships, arguing that the collection would be best placed due to lack of duplication (rather ironically seen as an advantage, given the multiple copies of the Shakespeare First Folio), and presenting the opportunity to memorialize Sir Leicester Harmsworth in maintaining his collection. 

There was, additionally and disappointingly although unsurprisingly, a great deal of effort on the part of Joseph Quincy Adams to emphasize the library as a “shrine” to English literature, Shakespeare, and a vision of English literature as vital to American culture. His comments, similar to those he made at the library’s opening in 1932, are redolent of white supremacist rhetoric that places elite British literature and cultural whiteness at the pinnacle of civilization. 

While the Folger and Harmsworth collections are indeed inspiring, they are in fact only a small part of our growing collections today—collections which, we hope, will be used (as they already have been) to tell a wide variety of stories about what it is to be human, and firmly reject the premise that Shakespeare or any other white canonical author is to be reified. 

Each collection that we hold as a part of this whole has its own story of creation and how it came to be here. Librarians and scholars would do well to examine the origins of these pieces, and the interesting personal and political connections that placed rare materials in some perhaps unexpected places.

Help with studying?

I don’t know if this is an odd thing to say but.. I wish to study even though I’m not a student and am unable to join any colleges or such. Is it possible for me to study courses freely online with no time limits, am i asking too much? If anyone could help that would be most appreciated. I’m mostly looking to study literature (classic or modern, doesn’t matter. :) ), art history and mythology if that helps.
