Let's talk seals

Hey Hey! I'm so happy seals are finally getting popular, so let's talk about some things! This post will go into global warming and seal protection, so if you're not interested, uh... too bad.

I don't know nearly as much as I really should (so please correct me if I'm ever wrong), so I'll be adding links and videos to better convey the message about global climate and the protection of seals. This post won't dive NEARLY as deep as it should; it's primarily here to raise awareness and serve as a starting point.

Seals are AMAZING; we can all agree on that, right? Well, while not all seals live in the Arctic, many use the ice floes there as sites for resting, birthing, molting, nursing, and mating. This rising-sun-related heat from climate change, which the large amount of ice would normally reflect away, is causing these very floes to melt or shatter much more quickly than the seals can adapt to.

Ice seals are highly dependent on these floes and the cold environments for their survival. You see, most ice seals eat primarily krill, shrimp, fish, and algae. Some of this algae is attached to the ice the seals rest on. So, with this melting ice, not only are the seals losing protective areas, but they are also losing food sources that are very important for yearling seals and pups.

Ice-Loving Seals and the Loss of Sea Ice

Climate change isn't impacting ice seals alone, however. Despite what many will believe... we are seeing the impacts of global warming RIGHT NOW and have been for years. Climate change is impacting our lives and will continue to. It's not only melting the ice, but also making seals in considerably warmer areas struggle to survive. With the worsening crisis, seals around the globe are losing access to proper prey sources.

Seals, Sea Lions, and Climate Change: Shifting Prey and Habitat Impacts

The impacts of climate change continue to threaten several seal and sea lion species.

Seal pups are being forced to fight against time to survive. Seal pups normally have around 12 days to properly fatten up to survive the freezing winters and waters. Our changing climate is shortening this time tremendously, causing the floes to break up more commonly and often sweep the baby away from its mother. More and more babies are drowning and missing from their mothers because of the sheer instability of the ice and climate.

Seals are a huge part of our planet, living in places we could never. They're caring, careful creatures that deserve respect. I wish I could go into more detail about what's happening, but this post is already super long, and I want people to read it. I can only go over the basics here, so again I ask you to read or watch the links and do your own research.

With the loss of this ice, the water is being allowed to get hotter, the heat no longer being reflected away from the depths. Even today, we can see this impact. Just look at what's happening to the ice seals! I can't tell you what to do or believe, but I beg you to look into global warming and its impacts... primarily what is happening in the oceans.

Again, I know I can't change your mind. I know it's hard; I'm still struggling to change things. But I trust we can do more; I feel I should have done more.

It's not too late to delay it. Don't let apathy control you.

Governments really cater to people who are married, with kids, than the people who aren't married, with kids. It's unfortunate. I don't wish to bring anyone in this harsh world. It's not worth it, in my honest opinion.
