Last Sights (warm-up drabble)

The city crumbled like a sand castle, eerily quiet as the walls caved in, the structures falling into themselves. Their cloak was heavy on their shoulders, the view from the hill they stood on showed the collapse throughout the whole city; even the surrounding city walls came down. It started from one end to the other, and as the last building fell, the only sound was a whoosh, the wind from the settling debris buffeting their cloak. Their hand tightened around their staff, the wood creaking in their hand, knuckles white from the pressure. The dust from the wreckage rose into the air in a sedate cloud, curling through the sun’s rays. The city had been empty, or was supposed to be. They made sure they had stood close enough to hear any screams, if someone hadn’t gotten out, but it was still a wretched sight, watching one’s home decay. Their fingers still tingled with the spell cast to try and stop it, but the force of the curse was too great. They could not even see the other sorcerer; they did not need to, to sense his presence. It was only from his cruel warning, that they knew to evacuate their home, that they knew that they couldn’t follow. He was after them, first and foremost. With one last look at the distant pile of debris, the dust cloud unmoving above it from the lack of the wind, they turned and strode down the hill, lonesome cloaked back swaying in the sunlight, the looming promise of a battle yet unfought following them.

Sometimes it is very helpful for writing when you own weird stuff because I was trying to figure out how to explain how someone was using a sword for a weird, non typical sword task while laying on my floor and then I looked up and would you look at that

Wattpad

Now, if you've been on Ao3 but never been on Wattpad, I'll tell you stories look different there.

The reading page is shorter from side-to-side, it's kinda encouraged to paragraph more than you would in Ao3 (at least from my experience), you can't change the themes on desktop so it's sometimes an eyesore to even look at.

Also, there's the issue of some books getting removed without warning because of an explicit chapter or a scene that's too graphic. Wattpad is both stricter yet not strict enough at the same time. There's also the fact with WP, books also sometimes are just like social media posting, making rants or just sharing memes in chapters. Whereas with Ao3, it's majorly normal stories and I think the type of stuff WP has is kinda discouraged on Ao3?

Also, though of course there will still be issues on Ao3, it's less abundant there and easier to deal with, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile over on Wattpad, people can make a new account within minutes immediately after getting removed, and can and will come back to harass you (One of the reasons I came here, some asshole kept harassing and reporting me account after account). With Ao3, you have to wait days to get an account.

And Wattpad is a business, will shove ads down your throat, make you see "Big deals!" in your notifications, on PC there will be ads that block the whole story and you can't X them so you have to refresh and hope that works, and then have classic cooperate-feeling "community" things. Then remove the community, I still refuse to forgive them over DM removal. Which kinda leads to another thing: They will throw glitchy ass updates without warning. One minute you're chatting on a message board, and the next the site is glitching out and acting stupid because they added some useless feature, or removed something people wanted kept.

Meanwhile Ao3 has none of that, it's run by volunteers and passion. They don't do ads, they just ask for some money and exceed their goals.

So as someone who's been on Wattpad for maybe 9ish years, and only joined Ao3 this year, it's a weird switch that kinda sets the mind on edge. Even if the switch is good, it squeezes on you.
