The Meddling Guest (warm-up drabble)

Lancelle’s feet were bare on the soft grass, as he made his way through the forest. He avoided the blooming flowers and small saplings, with his flute pressed to his mouth. The melodic tune that flowed from his lips and fingers brushed against the living things around him; the tree’s branches stretched higher, the blossoms unfurled their petals, the squirrels and rabbits blinked and twitched their tails at the burst of energy. Lancelle’s idle playing came and went as he walked, the birds in range flying higher, faster; the mice and moles dug faster, could smell their food closer than before. As he passed a bird, lying on the grass with a broken wing and rapid breathing, it rose to its feet, shook out its wings and took off.

He came upon a small hill, and paused his playing, grinning at the sight of the slope, the trees framing the base like an invitation. Lancelle walked up the steep hillside, the forest awash with noise even without his music. As he crested the hill, Lancelle’s eyes rested on the sleeping ogre.

Twenty feet tall, curled in the deep valley below, chest void of any breath. Moss and patches of grass grew over its body, and a bird nest was nestled by its tusks. No signs of decomposing showed on its grey skin, a still picture in an ever-moving landscape.

Lancelle grinned, and raised his flute to his lips.

writing is blasting through an enchanting description of a magical city filled with wonders from your own imagination, and then getting stuck on how a character would ask to buy a shirt

knowing that I need to continue to move the plot forward but always wanting to write each and every moment the characters are traveling, talking, eating, sleeping, their dreams, so much internal monologuing - it's not my fault!!!

Last Sights (warm-up drabble)

The city crumbled like a sand castle, eerily quiet as the walls caved in, the structures falling into themselves. Their cloak was heavy on their shoulders, the view from the hill they stood on showed the collapse throughout the whole city; even the surrounding city walls came down. It started from one end to the other, and as the last building fell, the only sound was a whoosh, the wind from the settling debris buffeting their cloak. Their hand tightened around their staff, the wood creaking in their hand, knuckles white from the pressure. The dust from the wreckage rose into the air in a sedate cloud, curling through the sun’s rays. The city had been empty, or was supposed to be. They made sure they had stood close enough to hear any screams, if someone hadn’t gotten out, but it was still a wretched sight, watching one’s home decay. Their fingers still tingled with the spell cast to try and stop it, but the force of the curse was too great. They could not even see the other sorcerer; they did not need to, to sense his presence. It was only from his cruel warning, that they knew to evacuate their home, that they knew that they couldn’t follow. He was after them, first and foremost. With one last look at the distant pile of debris, the dust cloud unmoving above it from the lack of the wind, they turned and strode down the hill, lonesome cloaked back swaying in the sunlight, the looming promise of a battle yet unfought following them.

I want to do some warm-up drabbles soon since I finally have time to write, so...

does anyone else not like rating the books they read? I only recently started doing it so I can easily see my book count vs my manga count, but even when I'm not thinking about it deeply it annoys me. 5 stars is not enough. there's too much nuance and emotions and thoughts that go into my opinions on the books I read, to only have 5 stars of options. this does not sum up my feelings about it. it should be outta 10. but again, I probably still wouldn't use it lol

A knight visits your tower and kneels before you. He holds out a scroll, and across it is one thing: your ask!

Your question is: Who controls the land trade routes and who controls the sea trade routes of your world? What gave them this advantage? What steps do they take to keep that control?

forgive my late answer! I'll answer for Project Rise for this... trade around the country is mainly kept up by the citizens outside of the capital, with local trade being much more common than the use of a currency; large trade routes, for food and supplies and luxury items and such, are controlled by the merchants themselves (though they report to a guild, which is owned by the rulers, and so really, who is in control there? The guise of freedom keeps the merchant obedient and the trade route running smoothly, for the most part). The sea trading routes are ran on the same principle, and the fictitious country Project Rise is based in is a smaller base for sea trade, with only one large port; so trading with other countries their local goods and treasures is their main pull in allyship and good relations. As such any merchant who is in charge of a sea trade route, is under much more pressure than the local trade routes, and so the tensions are higher and it tends to lead to more trouble.
