Alpha Reader versus Beta Reader

So, there’s a thing for writers that I don’t think very many people, in general, know about.

It’s called an alpha-reader.

Alpha readers, as far as I understand it, are readers who can receive a manuscript or pieces of a manuscript during its development and give notes on the excerpts and drafts they receive. This can include first impressions, issues with overall plot, enhancing character development, and anything that can help improve the story. 

Beta readers usually receive a manuscript after a couple of revisions and is ready for more specifically targeted alterations. This can also include plot, character development ect, but there shouldn’t be any major changes needed at this point. It happens, obviously, but the goal is more towards minor tweaks to improve the story and the writing itself such as tone, voice, line editing etc--along with other storytelling elements.

If you have any more information on these two types of readers, reblog, comment and all that. I think it would help writers to know that it’s okay to get help on their work as early as they’re comfortable with. And if you’re willing to act as one or the other or both, let people know what genres you accept.

Guys if you’re struggling with writing your story and get mad over it, sometimes this is simply your brain’s passive-aggressive way of telling you that you might need to revise the outline of your plot before going back at it. I’m not saying you need to know EVERY little detail of what’s going to happen, but to keep focused and not get lost mid-way it’s better to build at least a rough path towards the goal you yearn to achieve.

List the big events you want to occur, then add some little events in between which stem from the former and lead to the one that follows – make it a chain or a stellar constellation idc, just do it. Think of the Why and How before you get to actual writing; of course the cause you give can change while the event itself is unfolding, but it’s always nice to have some kind of base or backup plan to return to if something confuses you.

What’s great about the rough path is that nothing is set in stone yet – you can always improve, add and cut the parts you don’t like or just won’t fit your vision anymore. 

Don’t be afraid. You are allowed to do literally anything, from killing off a whole character to deleting those three chapters you’re not comfortable with anymore and start anew.

Remember: It’s your story, and yours alone. The only rules you might break there? are your own.
