Sustainable changes

When we try to make some positive (and often difficult) changes in life, we hardly think if the change is sustainable. Decisions are made in the heat of the moment.

Classic Example - a person resolves for better health, joins a gym, drives 15 mins to state-of-art gym, spends 1 hr goofing around, 15 mins back home. Total 1.5 hrs. Suddenly, carving out 1.5 hrs everyday is not sustainable. His other habits have not changed. Within a few days, he is going to run out of time and not do the gym.

Alternate example - Person spends 10 minutes brisk walking everyday, maybe he parks his car farther. Yeah, it is not as cool as it sounds, but sustainable. Years later, he can scale up to the 1.5 hr gym thing.

This technique works for every change we want to bring. Think small, think sustainable and build on it.
