me: alright, time to write and make progress on my wip!

also me, 12 hours later:

has not written a single word

instead has created a 5-hour long playlist

as well as an extensive backstory for a character who only appears once

and an overdetailed and completely unnecessary map

and of course, has changed the sidekick’s last name 23 times because it just “didn’t sound right”

please keep writing. write poorly. write shitty stories no one likes. have your characters be shallow and wooden and awkward. bite your mean commenters with your pearly white teeth. just keep writing.

When you’re writing a scene so emotional that you start to feel the characters emotions and start crying???

You know what’s one of the most painful things about writing?

When you’ve imagined a scene a million times. Every microemotion. Every word. Every SIGH. Even the color of the carpet.

But then you sit there staring at “chapter 12” on your screen, your hands hovering over the keyboard…

and you physically CAN’T write anything.

It’s such a strange feeling that it actually makes you nauseous.

If your characters sound like robotic narrators, you’re doing it wrong. Real people don’t say, “As you know, I was abandoned as a child and have severe trust issues.” They show it, through deflection, through sarcasm, through cutting someone off before they get too close. Let your dialogue reveal character, not just deliver exposition.
