Wyrewolves, also known as Oncepeople, are an uncommon subrace of werewolves. They often viewed with pity and disgust by humans, treated like the homeless or feral dogs. Wyrewolves were fullblooded humans once but fell due to a virus that swept through the small western town of Steelstone. When the corpses of the plague victims were buried, wild coyotes and wolves were drawn to the graves. Once they slept on it, the spirit of the victim would infect them and they'd become one being.
Many wyrewolves stand on the edge between humanity and beast, wavering between two minds unsteadily. Many are intelligent and can bargain with humans, some even rejoining their lost families, but many others are lost; without language and only instinct to drive them. It is because of this divide between the intelligent and the witless that wyrewolves are so debated upon. Those with minds are known as newkin while those who are "without" are known as direkin; these are archaic terms as the difference is not so easily defined.
While the original populace came from a dark curse, wyrewolves can breed with both each other, wild canines and even, controversially, humans. Breeding is rare however as it's a split chance of having a child with a sound mind and one that is only driven by bloodlust and the hunt. Even a human child with wyreblood can be highly dangerous; the infamous serial killer George Nightshade having had a wyrewolf grandfather.
There have been calls for a cull to happen among the populace as wyrewolf families migrate out into larger cities. Many civilized people seeing them as abominations or a dark force to be slaughtered. New laws have been set to protect our lupine cousins, but with many being barely better than beasts, would it even matter?
Wyrewolves are distinct from their wild cousins by a few traits. They have eyes almost human were it not for the slit pupil, fingers too long to be paws, a slanted back with powerful hindlegs and teeth both sharp and flat. They have a wide, deep chest allowing good stamina. They are able to travel at high speeds for a long time using their strong hindlegs, even after their hands have gone numb and their head light with breathlessness.
Had a weird dream so I drew the species from it. I don’t really like this pic as there’s details I’d like to fix (back legs, chest), but it works
