100 — New Americana (Halsey)
~~
You watch him drive, one arm hanging out the open window, cigarette in hand. You always told him not to smoke, but he doesn’t listen. You wish you could be more insistent, but every time he inhales, you imagine him exhaling into your mouth. You wish you could taste the tobacco on his breath, the ashes on his tongue, flavored like the void.
You watch him dance, wild and free like no one’s ever told him he’s not good enough. He blasts the bass loud enough to break your eardrums and he grins at you with white teeth flashing in the fading sunlight. The windows are open, and the summer breeze at twilight brushes through the base. He reaches for your hand, and you let him take it, and you dance with him, even though you shouldn’t.
You watch him talk, tracing the lines of his lips with your eyes. He talks with his hands, waving them everywhere, and you always have to pick up his drink so he doesn’t knock it onto the floor. It’s well into autumn now, and everywhere you walk the leaves are changing, turning rosebush-red and terracotta-orange and gilded blackstone-gold. But you sit outside, at a little table at a little cafe courtesy of Scar, and you drink his champagne and wonder.
He rests his elbow on the table and leans forward conspiratorially, just in time for you to realize you haven’t been listening. “Don’t you agree? It’s pretty splendid.”
You take another uncomfortable sip of his drink. He wasn’t using it anyway. “Yeah, it’s pretty great, X,” you agree, though you’ve no idea what you’re agreeing to. Xisuma leans back in his chair, interlocking his fingers behind his head, his elbows stuck straight out. He’s so beautiful, and you want to tell him. You want him to understand.
“Alright, you talk about something now,” he decides, reaching for his helmet to put back on. (You know why he needs it. You understand that he’s made to breathe in the stars and respirating normal air damages his lungs. Just another reason he shouldn’t smoke. But still, you can’t help the sharp spike of regret that expands in your chest, pushing your organs out of the way, when he has to put it back on.)
You clear your throat, putting on your best Dramatic Narrator Voice. Martyn always complimented you on it, always said it was one of your greatest skills, and you honed it for years to make him like you. Maybe it can work again. You launch into the epic tale of two friends who found every opportunity to be together, to build together, to teach each other things, and how one of them burned with want. He was greedy, he was selfish, and he desired things he could not have. So he grew envious of his friends, of anyone who got to see the other in all his glory and ruin.
“How does it end?” X asks, and you think under his helmet he might be raising his eyebrows. He always does that when you stop in the middle of a sentence, or when he’s worried, or when he’s curious. When he’s invested. You hope he’s invested.
You break the eye contact, looking down at the surface of the table. “They die,” you manage. “He never tells him. Their story ends in tragedy.”
And just like that, you have the realization. It dawns on you like the sun, rising above the treeline to cast long shadows upon the ground.
Just in case you thought xdog was cool, this is the company owner's post about "his" new harness design that he straight up stole from Non-stop. The only difference is the logos. I wouldn't be surprised if he cut off the Non-stop insignia and sewed on his own. And that's not even the first time xdog has done shady shit, or stolen a design. He ignores scientific fact proving the xdog vest can have detrimental effects and the products are shoddy quality. This guy and his cult routinely harass people who dislike xdog's products as well. Don't support trash companies like this, they don't actually care about the wellbeing of your dog, they only care about profit.
