thinking abooout. yazter. incoming rant that might make zero sense but i have to get the thoughts out of my head
i think the dynamic is soooo interesting no matter how you slice it. though specifically the idea of their relationship being initially defined by their proximity to the doctor is so yummy to me mmm delicious
the master, immediately jealous of the doctor's obvious new favourite, and yaz, desperate to understand what exactly the doctor could have possibly seen in someone like him forever ago. it's only natural they'd be drawn to each other. (the master goes in to taunt yaz in his envy; yaz goes in to analyse him while keeping him at arm's length from the doctor. in the end, it's yaz who does the taunting, knowing she has what he does not; the master, of course still envious, tries to learn just what makes yaz soooo special.)
but as it turns out, they have... a few things in common. namely their love for the doctor. and the doctor's love for them, returned in a way that neither of them can truly be satisfied with. so they bond over that. it's a wry and reluctant sort of friendship, at first, but then as it happens they get on quite well together.
after all, the master is happy to freely tell yaz all the things the doctor kept close to her chest for so long, and yaz is happy to listen. she doesn't try to fix him, at least not in the way the doctor does. and she's patient with him in a way the doctor can't afford to be anymore.
there are very few universes where yaz and the master are actually together or are together for long. whether or not they'd admit it, they're both using the other as a replacement for the doctor, and since of course neither of them are the doctor, the illusion falls apart quickly. still, both of them find a comfort in pretending.
the doctor, for her part, can't tell who she's more jealous of. she's mostly glad to see them getting along. or so she tells herself.
