The Case of the Carrot Colored Feet
There are certain memories of random incidents that replay through our minds so many times to the point that we can't remember if it really happened or is merely a fabrication of our subconscious. One such memory that has stayed with me for many years is one of overhearing my mother ask a doctor why the palms of my hands and feet were yellowy-orangish when I was a small child. His reply, according to my hazy recollection, was that it may have been because I ate so many carrots.
This topic was brought up today in conversation. For once and for all I did some research to get to the bottom of this possible-myth. Turns out there is some weight to the idea. According to Dr. Andrew Neil, the condition is called "carotenemia". It occurs as the result of consuming foods rich in beta carotene, a fat-soluble pigment that also is attributed to the color of the vegetable itself. It is not a harmful condition and can actually help protect you from the sun! Now, my only concern is: how many carrots would I have to eat to turn into an oompa-loompa?
