Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas)
"The Common Yellowthroat was one of the first bird species to be catalogued from the New World, when a specimen from Maryland was described by Linnaeus in 1766." (All About Birds)
Learning that yellowthroats were one of the first catalogued species does not surprise me. They are not hard to find when in a scrubby habitat, especially those where standing water is common. They are inquisitive birds and will often respond to 'phishing', which is when a birder tries to imitate the warning call of a bird to see who comes out of the bushes to investigate. Many warblers don't seem to care about this behavior, but yellowthroats are nosy as hell and will come out to see what is worth scolding.
All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share images was granted by Phillips Tract Banding Station (PTBS).
A broad black mask lends a touch of highwayman’s mystique to the male Common Yellowthroat. Look for these furtive, yellow-and-olive warblers

Central CT, today. It was in weedy area by an overflow stream. Was with a bunch of Northern Parulas. This was the only one nice enough to stay put for a few minutes, but not nice enough to give me a wing view. All the little guys in my bird books seem to either have an eyeline or an eyebrow, so guessing I'm barking up the wrong family tree.

Ok, so, hello, yess, this lookes to me like immature female Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), family Parulidae, so you are in the right family.

Common Yellothroat aren't common around here! by Ruby 2417 Via Flickr: They're actually pretty rare, so I was chuffed to have one pose for me. San Rafael, Ca . March, 2025.
