made up fic title: prediction, transposition, disappearance, levitation
the answers to the "magic words" theme clues for tuesday's newsday crossword haha
Oh I love it, thank you!! This got really long, so apologies jkskssk. (For those interested, send me a made up fic title and I'll tell you what I would write to go with it as per this post!)
I don't know why but my brain is going to a modern au Jim/Olu art thief au. So:
- Jim is an art thief. A good one. They maybe picked up some extra skills while training with Nana, and somewhere along their path, got into the business. They're still low-key tracking Alfeo de la Vaca, but haven't killed him yet. Spanish Jackie, who they don't know is connected to him yet, is their main competition art thieving wise
- They're also good on a con, to a certain extent. Part of how they get into places is that they take on low paying jobs (at the coffee shops or souvenier shops, or as a janitor, or at the front desk handing out flyers and maps) - always under a different name, different story, etc.
- Oluwande is their neighbor. They've been neighbors for years, living across the hall from each other, never really doing more than exchanging some idle conversation (Olu tries to borrow cups of sugar from them but Jim never has any actual baking supplies in their cupboards and it always fails, although he does give them muffins sometimes). They've both got jobs that take them out of town for weeks on end, but Jim likes him, and it's anonymous enough that it feels fine.
- Jim starts a new job, one in their own city, which is extraordinarily risky, even for them. They get a job at the cafe in the museum, and find Oluwande working there. It's a job he does while putting himself through school is what he tells them. They talk more, and Jim likes him, likes him a whole fucking lot. Which makes it harder, because there's a good chance they'll have to clear out of the city afterwards. They don't really tell him anything about themself, careful about that part at least
- The job goes alright. They wait a few weeks, then clear out, slipping a note under Oluwande's door saying good luck, he was a good neighbor
- Six months later they're in a different city, working another job. They get a job at the museum's gift shop, this time, and Oluwande is there again. He's surprised and delighted to see them, and doesn't seem to find anything odd about being in the same museum again. His mum is sick, he explains. He's taken a job closer to home, and they weren't hiring at the starbucks in the museum, so he went here.
- the same thing happens. Jim really likes working with Olu, and they figure, there's no fucking way I'll see him again after this - so they maybe romance him a little, and have a few hook ups. Nothing serious is what they tell themself, they just like him, and he's handsome. They never bring him over to their place. They fall in love hard and fast, and know that it's a really bad idea, but can't help themself.
- The job goes quicker. A timeline gets sped up, and they steal the thing. They don't say goodbye this time, either, although they would have liked to. They have to leave in a hurry, using a passport they haven't touched in years.
- they take a few months and let things cool down, moping around south america and the caribbean, trying to convince themself that it was a good thing that they left him, that it would only end in heartbreak. Then they make for europe, and find a new museum, a new job.
- Oluwande is there, again. This time they're real suspicious. They're lucky, and they see him in the coffee shop when they're going in to hand in a resume. They figure he's gotta be interpol, or something, and that he's somehow on to them. But they also need to do this job. Like, badly (for Plot Reasons I can't think of lol). So they take a night shift as a janitor, and try like hell to avoid him. Maybe this time they're wearing the beard etc, trying to blend in as a man, hope that helps.
- The job goes poorly. Like, really poorly. Maybe Alfeo de la Vaca is there, because he's Jackie's husband, and he's doing a job for her. And Jim kill him, and then maybe falls through a skylight, or something, and they're fucking sure they're going to get caught or die, one or the other. But at least he's dead, that's good enough for them, even if it wasn't the purpose of the job. They manage to drag themself out and into an ally - and right into Oluwande
- Oluwande's jaw drops when he sees them - the beard is gone, now, and they're bleeding in more than a few places, guards shouting and alarms blaring behind them - and then takes their arm and drags them into the getaway van that he'd hidden in the alley. He works for Jackie, and was waiting for Alfeo. He drives them to a safehouse of his, one that Jackie doesn't know about, or something.
- He patches Jim up, and somehow it comes out that he's also an art thief, but does the back end of things. He does tech, and support, and pulls the exact same con Jim does to get into museums and learn the lay of the land. Jim feels like an idiot for not realizing, for believing his very convincing lies about his mother etc etc. Especially because they thought that he was a bad liar - and he is, but only in specific circumstances. But at least he's not interpol.
- Jim tells him about Alfeo de la Vaca, and the murder of their parents and brother, and how Jackie will be out for blood now that they killed her husband. Oluwande listens, and then tentatively offers to help them run away. He's got the tech skills, and they've got the rest of the skills - together they could disappear. Jackie will never find them, and they both have enough saved up that they can ditch art theft, or they can do better together, their own team.
- Jim nearly runs away. It's terrifying, and takes more trust than they've put in anyone in all their life. But they love him, a lot, and they desperately want to not be alone anymore. They say yes. They say yes, and Oluwande kisses them like he's never going to leave them ever
- they run away together, and they never look back
(I will probably never write this story, but it was very fun to imagine XD. Blanket permission granted to basically anyone who feels inspired and wants to write a sexy jim/olu art theft au)
