some wips of dragon mimicry with Yessica, the one on the left is from a car morph design my friend Sabre did for me way back, the right one is something i think fits her personality in more of a fantasy setting that i designed myself

“[The invite inside was completely inconspicuous, almost bland. A cream-colored piece of paper with black lettering in a fancy font and little frills in the margins, as if it was an afterthought to this whole affair. The date of the event was printed largely at the top and somebody - most likely his mother - had used a red pen to underline it as well as the text at the bottom.
Reigen Arataka and guest, it said.
Clearly, they had intended for him to bring somebody with him to this affair. And there was only one person he could possibly ask.]

When it comes to getting his parents off his back in regards to having a girlfriend, Reigen employs the oldest trick in the book. Meanwhile, Serizawa just wonders when his life turned into a romcom.”
Good Girl Trope In Stories
I talked about Honda Tohru from Fruits Basket and how i find unrealistic the way narrative and characters treated her in here and here. It was classic shojo fantasy. (I am not gonna mention how shoujo is suposed to be young girls but shoujo authors make toxic and unrealistic relationships look pure love, they make it look normal for young girls but well, this post isnt about it.)
And i would wonder how her character would look like in more realistic story. Then, while reading a webtoon named Golden Time, i found a character who really remind me of her.
Main character’s sister Agnes. Just like Tohru or any other good girl in stories, she is kind, well behaved, naive, crybaby, positive girl. (And their hair style, lol). But much more realistic version.
*Be carefull for the spoilers*
First, i will talk about story. Genre is romance, josei, dram etc. Fortunately its not shoujo. Just like many other webtoons, main character is the one who can stand up for herself, classic ‘strong female lead’. Name is Yessica. She is also masculine, strong and of course, just like many other main characters, she is immediately admired and loved by other important characters. She is noticed. She is also the one who is protecting her sister. Later, she has romantic relationship with prince Alex (male lead) etc etc.
Now, i would like to talk about Agnes and her story, why she is more realistic and relatable than her sister Yessica.
Even though, Agnes is very kind and fragile, she is not protected and loved by other people. Actually, because of this, she is constantly crushed down, humaliated by others. People lookd down on her for being ‘weak’.
Even her sister Yessica who protects her is having a hard time for it cause she feels burdened by it.
This is the reality of being people pleasure, fragile and someone dependant on others. If you dont respect yourself, others cant respect you either. Especially, you wil be easy target for certain people who will wanna take advantage of you.
Even though, she is princess, she is not respected cause Agnes is not kind of character who can stand up for herself. She is weak, fragile, scared.
And here’s her past, the reason she became like this;
She used to be naughty, cheerfull, social girl, until the day she was traumatized, she found her mother’s dead body and it broke her.
She wasnt always ‘weak’ girl who needed protection. She was traumatized and her trauma didnt magically make her strong, unlike many characters in stories. This is realistic because unadressed trauma makes you weak, makes me fragile which is what happens with Agnes too.
She is realistic cause her strugless, pain, the way she dealt with it and the way others sees her cause of her behavours, all tose things makes her far more realistic and relatable than main character Yessica.
And only one who try to reach out to her is king, who used to be like her. He empathise with her sitution cause he experienced the similar things. He also felt like a burden to others. Again, unlike her sister, she is not magically sovle problems and loved be others.
When i am so glad to have realistic character like Agnes, narrative treats her as weak. Yessica is treated as better cause she is strong. As if Yessica is the only one who had pain until now. Yeah, its good that she protected her sister but Agnes had been through a lot too but realistically her trauma makes her weak and she is being looked on by other character and narrative (I say narrative cause story didnt adress this as flaw of other characters), as if she is blamed for having trauma at first place.
When yessica talked about her trauma, people become angry and protective for her but when it comes to Agnes, she is treated as ‘trouble’. Its really sad, really...
I would personaly like both sisters rising together with their own way, not idolising one ad discarding another.
I talked about the issue with Fruits Basket. In that story, characters like Tohru was idolised, adored by every other character in story.
Characters somehow unrealistically notice her kindness and drawn to her which doesnt happen in real life. Just because you are kind, it doesnt mean you can reach out to other people and magically become a light for them.
Even though, Tohru has a trauma and issues too, its hardly get focused. For example, even though, she is loved by a lot of people, unconditonally, what makes Tohru feel so worthless that she feels like she has to be selfless?
Why someone who is loved so much feels worthless? Why Tohru feels like she has to smile all the time? Because she doesnt open her real feelings, she is acting ‘the good girl’, she feels distanced to others but story hardly ever focused on this, how much being idolised or being angel by even her own mother makes her feels disconnected to others.
Tohru’s mother might really be good person but she felt that fear of abandonment since the day her mother left her to kil herself. It was one moment but it became permanent. She literally felt like she has to be like her father and changed her speech but again, it was hardly focused. Why? Because then it means Tohru is flawed, Her mother is flawed, that they are not perfect. But story didnt get out of that ‘black white’ worldview.
In fruits basket, characters like them are idolised cause of how much ‘selfless;’ she is. In this webtoon, characters like them are seen as weak. Its interesting that in other story this kind of character is seen as hero/savour while in this story, she gets the same treatment Akito does, being the ‘shackles’ for others.
(This girl in picture is mc’s sister from Teenage Mercenary webtoon.)
Whether in manga, webtoon or series. This kind of characters are whether idolised, treated as weak, protected or seen as useless. Even though, there is so many potential in them. They are far more better than unrealistically strong characters who can somehow ‘defeat’ trauma. (Dont make me even mention of american series or other series who made mean agressive girls look like cool.)
Why cant girl just be girls? (or boys) Why characters cant be just treated as human, normal human being? Why stories always label victims as bad and good or weak and strong....because thats victim blaming. Because everyone deal their pain with different way, its because they are all in different sitution. Everyone’s pain is valid. Yes, it should be adressed if that behavour is toxic, unhealthy, destructive or self destructive but they shouldnt be treated as they are any less cause they couldnt find a good way to deal with their trauma. What matters is that them changing that attitude after realization and empathy.
Anyway, i love Agnes and i would lke to see more characters like her.
I really hope we get stories like this.
