“If you glare any harder, you’re going to crease that pretty makeup all up,” James says, suddenly at your elbow, leaning against the wall and looking down at you with an amused smile. He’s dressed in full vampire attire, complete with an open white shirt, trails of fake blood staining down from his lips to his chest.

“I’m not glaring!” You argue, definitely glaring at the cups scattered across you and Lily’s coffee table, certainly already beginning the process of leaving stained rings. You wrinkle your nose, feeling the makeup applied there smudge with the movement. Stubbornly, you ignore it.

“It’s okay! I find how uptight you are very adorable,” James assures you, grinning widely when you roll you eyes. “See, the attitude really does it for me!”

“I don’t have an attitude,” you grumble, tired of his teasing flirting and simultaneously hoping he never gives it up. The constant compliments from him make you dizzy in a way you find more pleasing than any drink you’ve had tonight.

“You do, it’s lovely. Almost as lovely as those big deer eyes — did you put in contacts for your costume?” James sounds genuinely amazed as he ducks his head to get a closer look at you.

You’ve gone all out for your costume, following the tried and true Mean Girls method of animal feature plus skimpy outfit. It had taken you hours of practice to nail down the deer makeup and you bat your eyes at James to show off your work.

“Just makeup,” you answer, unable to fight a smile. James mirrors you with a gooey look, eyes going soft and warm.

“Prettier than any other girl I’ve seen,” he says, so earnest with that big smile and creeping dimples that you blush. “You’re stunning.”

“Careful James, one day I might believe your teasing and fall in love with you and we all know you don’t need another girl tripping at your heels.”

James scoffs, pushing off of the wall to trail behind you as you walk away. “You think I’m teasing? Still?” His arm slings around your waist, pulling you to a stop and tugging your back up against his chest.

The warmth is nice, the feel of his chest against the open skin your shirt leaves across your back exhilarating.

“Oh, please,” you tilt you head back to show him another eye roll. “You’re going to break my heart with all this joking,” you scoff, brushing off the fluttering in your belly.

“Give me a chance, dear,” he pleads, winking at his pun, “I’ll prove I’m not joking.”

“In your dreams, James!” You say, heart thudding at the silly thought that maybe he’s not playing. His hand is spread across your lower stomach, fingers slipping against your waist so sweetly before they pinch playfully.

“Every single one of them,” he promises as you slip away, trailing behind you still as you maneuver through the party.
