Sexual assault

I don’t think people actually realize how much of a lasting effect sexual assault can have on a person.

I was I think 6 years old when my cousin who was only 8 at the time did things to me that I didn’t understand but years later realized that it was not normal. He used to stay with my family a lot during that time and every time he wanted to sleep in my room and he made me do stuff to him and he did stuff to me. I was only 6 and to this day it still haunts me.

I’m 17 now and he is 19 and this is the first time I’m letting anyone know about this. I don’t know if he remembers but if he does he certainly pretends that he doesn’t. I feel very uncomfortable around him and I’d rather not be around him. I got away from him because we moved to another country.

I now have a boyfriend and sometimes when we want to do something I feel bad and uncomfortable because I start thinking about what he did to me. I’m happy for the first time in a long time and he is still ruining that for me.

I want all the women and men who have been sexually assaulted to know that they are not alone. You can get through this and you are not weak. This is hard and I know that. I want other people who have not been through this to know that it’s so much harder than you think and it’s not just something that you can “get over”.
