Becoming more and more obsessed with this crash out tbh. (Link)
Your choice , your pride , I may stay aside
I think..
(And everyone, be very calm about what I'm about to say..)
That Hori draws a parallel between Enji and Bakugou.
I just rewatched when Enji became the #1 hero after All Might's last win. He reacts in almost exactly the same way as Bakugou winning first place in the UA tournament, throwing a tantrum, breaking shit, angry as f*ck. They both even say the same thing: "I don't want to win like this."
I don't think I ever noticed it until now. Enji represents the far extreme of pride. Everything he does, thinks about, is for his own pride. There's no limit. He's not above hitting his own kids in order to get what he desires- more ego. More praise, more fame. Just everything more.
And these actions of pride, of trying to boost your ego, is a defensive and futile effort in trying to stem shame and feelings of worthlessness. You seek praise from others because you're not good enough for yourself.
However. Obviously we have some clear distinctions. Enji uses premeditated "bad decisions" when seeking to become greater. But Bakugou's bad behavior is on the opposite side of the same coin, with his actions instinctive and reactive. Every single thing he has ever planned on doing has always been a good one. (Well. Mostly.)
I guess the thing that I love about this show is that Hori is really great at showing the extremes of behavior. Pride and all its benefits and dangers is such a huge theme in the story: Izuku in growing his sense of pride in himself, Bakugou learning to deal with a wounded ego. Enji... enough said. Even All Might, with his fallen pride in his public and personal image. It's great. Pretty much every character turning point was when they learned to deal with a loss of sense of self, to recognize the need to grow beyond your own self-identity.
(My personal favorite actually was Momo's ego death, and her subsequent inability to trust herself on even small decisions. It hit very close to home for me. I think a lot of people sometimes don't come back from that. To be able to recognize your limitations and deficiencies is a very painful but necessary step in order to work to overcome them. ... Or you can just refuse to ever look at them and then spend your whole life unconsciously building and rebuilding your self-worth with a rotten foundation (aka Enji) )
Anyway. End of rambling.

You valued your pride more than you ever valued me, it was my mistake to believe otherwise....
