so like I said. I have written a Yansim oneshot (I know, wild in 2026. Disclaimer: if I could hunt the developer for sport I would)
uhhh I basically made some kind of AU solely for the purpose of writing fics about this game with my sanity intact . I put the rainbow girls back in the same time period because Dude was more willing to split up the iconic group of characters than to remove the upskirt shot mechanic that no one likes 💀 also I removed the upskirt shot stuff but that isn't relevant for this fic lol
Fiddled with a lot of character names to make them like, Work. It's kinda funny, pedodev messed with the character names himself but still refuses to actually learn anything about the culture he's writing about in terms of Language. Like Mayuzumi -> Miyu is not a thing that I think happens as far as I am aware. Also some of the names he half-changed by saying it wasn't their real names . Were actual functional names I think??? Damn dude really can't do anything right.
btw if any followers I have who weren't into this game at any point are reading this: I am imploring you Not to get into this game this hyperfixation is a curse from hell it is Not fun to like this game if you're not rewriting Fxcking everything. I liked it when I was 12 and the game hadn't gone 100% off the rails 😭 I don't know why my brain isn't letting go now but I have the will to write so . Yeah please especially if you're a minor so not get into this game, I am writing for my fellow unfortunate victims of Being burdened with being interested in it
ok I've gone on long enough uh so summary of the AU changes relevant for this fic: I fiddled with a few names but tried to keep them as close to the original as possible just made them like Functional, this is a goddamn high school not a college cosplaying as a high school or whatever the fxck he tried to retcon it to, and the rainbow girls are restored. Also Kokona is still a rival because she's iconic.
Ok thank you , I'm putting the actual fic under the cut now
Yui Rioka wasn't exactly 'normal,' that she could recognize- most of her fellow students weren't too interested in the many ways the human body could shut down, or in extensively studying real crimes, or in the dark web and its many real horrors lying under everyone's noses. She'd become a bit of a pariah in junior high after she'd 'slipped' while holding a bucket of red paint and dumped it all on the most popular girl in school (who had also called Yui a freak the other day), but no one at Akademi knew that- and she wasn't planning on letting them know, either.
It would be weird looking in from the outside, seeing how close Yui was with the other 'rainbow girls' (as their friend group had been called by others) who were practically nothing like her, but the way they'd been brought together had been so perfect it would have seemed like fate.
Kokona and Saki had already been friends since junior high, ever since Saki had been at the right place and time to see Kokona getting harassed by Hoshiko for her looks and stepped in to stand up to her- so when they saw Hoshiko approach Yuna, they knew where it was going and stepped up to defend the more shy student. Koharu had overheard them talking about it at lunch and, hearing Yuna's fears of getting jumped while she was alone, stepped in to swear on basically bodyguarding her- and she stuck to it for the next few days, until Yuna felt comfortable enough to go alone...
And that was when Hoshiko decided to go after her, during cleaning time.
She's brought a pair of scissors and was threatening to use them, and Yuna was too scared to scream- but luckily, she wouldn't have to, because Mei came around in time to see more than enough, and very loudly called down the hall for a teacher. Unfortunately, Hoshiko managed to convince them that she wasn't actually threatening physical violence, and being a rich pretty girl and intimidating enough to make Yuna too scared to confess meant that it was just Mei's word against Hoshiko's and the teacher couldn't take sides.
And then Hoshiko and the other uber-rich pretty girls started hanging out, especially around that Renshaku girl, and they became grossly popular- Hoshiko put up her little mask of pep and positivity, acting like a saint. Yui hated popular girls, and walking by the five who knew Hoshiko's true nature while they were talking about how much of a piece of crap she really was piqued Yui's interest. She wanted in, and they let her in, and they all shared the one secret that nobody would believe any of them on.
That being said, Yui was against them on principle as two-faced popular girls (if Hoshiko was, the rest probably were)- she wasn't exactly against bullying in the same way. Or... other things. As long as it was happening to the right person.
So, when she saw that Aishi girl stick a knife into the chest of one of those Occult Club weirdos... hey, who would she be to judge? That boy, Dakugawa-something (she didn't know his first name), she'd heard a thing or two about him the other day. Apparently he said he wanted to kiss a corpse or something gross like that- and of course he was denying it, but could you REALLY believe him? He was in the goddamn Occult Club.
Aishi was staring at her, blankly. Probably thought she was in trouble.
"They had it coming!" Yui shrugged, winking. "Don't worry... I won't tell anyone what I saw."
She turned her back once Aishi lowered her knife. Good; she wasn't gonna get her throat slit, then. She could just move on like nothing ever happened.
Aishi covered her tracks, it seemed- judging by the poster posted on the Cafeteria wall.
MISSING
Atsuo Dakugawa
...she kept her mouth shut, as promised.
Most of the students moved on, quickly- of course, except for the other weirdos in the Occult Club. But the normal students? Not a word, just as it should be.
...
People started saying weird things about Kokona, all of a sudden.
Someone had started saying shit, about how she was the one who made that boy go missing. It spread across the whole school in no time. Some thought she kidnapped him, others thought worse.
And Yui could do nothing without incriminating herself as an accomplice.
Kokona would cry into Saki's arms, about being bullied. The whole Renshaku posse were on her whenever she was alone.
Daidai would call her a whore because of her chest. If she countered, she'd get called a killer as well.
Murasaki kept telling her it was 'just a joke,' and that she was too sensitive and needed to shut up.
Momoiro would stand by, point and laugh. Apparently, she looked like she didn't want to be there. But she was there.
Renshaku herself would clap chalky erasers in her face just to make her choke on the dust.
Hoshiko made her eat a cockroach.
Kokona told the rest of them to stop hanging out with her, or being near her at all. She didn't want to drag their reputations down with her.
They protested, but she started avoiding them. There wasn't anything they could do to change her mind.
They tried to counter the gossip in any way they could, they tried telling other students about Hoshiko's sadistic side- it didn't matter; no one would believe them over the popular kids.
Yui hated popular kids, on principle.
She was starting to hope that Aishi would take one of them out next.
She'd decided that enough was enough. It hadn't even been a week, but nothing was getting better. It was all going so fast. It was already Friday.
Kokona was still getting bullied, still avoiding the rest of them.
Yui wanted to catch those two-tongued bastards in the act and tell them right to their face, consequences be damned, that they were going through all this effort to drag down an innocent girl like the idiots they were.
...
But she didn't end up catching that; She saw something else entirely.
It made her blood freeze, and then start to boil.
It was a lonely spot on the rooftop. Nobody went to it because Kokona was usually there.
And now Kokona was lying on the floor, limp and bloodied.
Aishi was standing over her, with a pair of scissors in her hands.
All bloody.
Covered in Kokona's blood.
Aishi looked at the frozen Yui, and she looked just as blank as before.
Then, she looked back at Kokona, and shoved her red-splattered scissors into her skirt pocket.
And all Yui saw was red
"You..." she growled, fists balled and shaking, and
She ran up to Aishi without thinking
And tackled her into the ground
Yui held Aishi's head down and screamed profanities in her ears.
She was a worthless piece of shit, and she would know it.
Her screaming was enough to attract some students, and things went from there.
Yui kept screaming, even after police were called, even after an ambulance was called, even after teachers tried to get her off, even after students stood around to stare and say things that didn't matter, even after the cops arrived and pried her away so they could put Aishi under arrest.
Then they dragged Aishi away in cuffs, and Yui didn't stop screaming until she was out of sight.
The world was ringing, deafeningly. Her eyes fell to Kokona's body, to Kokona who might have been gone, to Kokona who didn't deserve any of this, to Kokona who she could have saved if she had just opened her mouth.
Her knees buckled.
She took Kokona into her arms, and stared at her delicately closed eyes, and she sniffled, and she started screaming again.
It wasn't even in words this time.
Then the paramedics came, and they rushed Kokona away, to see if they could save her, and Yui didn't know if she could face what would happen no matter the outcome.
She didn't feel anything until a hand was on her shoulder.
"Th-that, that was really brave of you, Yui."
"..."
Koharu's eyes were glimmering, wet. Her smile was so fake it hurt to look at. She could hear the footsteps now. She knew the others were there. She could hear Saki struggling not to cry.
It made it all the worse.
"...I-I'm, not brave..."
She had to force it out of her throat.
"O-Of course you were, Yui, you-"
"I COULDA STOPPED ALL OF THIS IF I HADN'T KEPT MY STUPID MOUTH SHUT!!!"
We're officially in the territory of the first rival. Obviously since it isn't Osana, you might expect it to be Amai, but no! Kokona is now going to be the first rival, like god intended. Yui being here might raise some eyebrows considering she was shafted to the 80's, so here's what's going on with her. (also fun fact tumblr fucked up and deleted 90% of this post so this is me typing it again kill me)
So, in mid-2018, nine of the Rainbow Twelve (Yui, Haruto, Yuna, Sota, Koharu, Hayato, Mei, Ryusei, Saki, Sora, Kokona, Riku - removed - not removed) were removed from the game to improve the frame rate (which went well /s). The removed students were later readded to 1980's mode, which is just a really bad compromise. They were removed before all clubs were added so why couldn't they just be put in clubs like Riku, Saki and Kokona?
Quick side note, for those who don't know, their names were picked by taking the 12 most popular Japanese names from 2012 for some reason, and Yui was the most popular, and Rio was 2nd most, so she was called Yui Rio. This was also done with the teachers. You might wonder why her name has gone unchanged then, but I found out that for the rainbow students, all of the firstname-lastnames are real last names! Like, for example, Yui Rio can be written as 夢 李汪.
For her design, all I changed was giving her her old long stockings as they are objectively superior, and making her little baby dick ponytail longer cause I think that looks better. Her eyes are also now a light red.
As for her info, I changed the Evil personality to be the Misanthrope personality. Evils used to smile and be happy whenever anyone died, and wouldn't even call the police after leaving school, but that is kind of overpowered so I wanted to change it. AreYouCodingDev made an attempt to do this with the Spiteful persona but failed. One because Spiteful is an ass name cause it sounds like a bratty child, but it was also really weird, cause they'd only have the evil reaction to a low reputation student, or a bully if they were bullied. This is just... dumb. In my version, people with the Misanthrope personality will have the evil reaction on specific students they don't like. This will change for every Misanthrope student. Yui pretty much hates everyone (me too gurl me too /sar)
I wanted to put the Rainbow students in clubs, and I chose the Art Club for Yui so she can vent her dark interests (you'll see). And for one more thing before we get to her bio, YandiddyDev originally had a story for her that involved her being evil cause she betrayed Kuu Dere so she could have friends or something but that's dumb ngl. And I can say that cause he basically admitted it for once. Anyway, here's my take on Yui.
Yui grew up with parents who weren’t all that attentive about what she was up to on the internet. She watched gore, horror and true crime content from the age of just five. This desensitised her to these subjects early on, and she began to get weirdly fascinated by it. As a child, she didn’t pick up that she should probably hide these feelings from other children, and she developed a bad reputation as a weird, freaky kid at best, and a potentially violent danger at worst, and she was often bullied by the other children who thought she was a complete weirdo. This changed when she was twelve. Her parents split up, her mother won custody of her, and she chose to move back in with Yui’s grandmother in Buraza Town. Here, she had a completely fresh start, and when she met who would become her current friend group, she attempted to hide her fascination with violence and appear to be completely normal. A few of her friends also had interests in true crime, much to Yui's delight, however this soured once she realised that their interests were just that - interests - and Yui feared that if she ever revealed the extent of her liking and knowledge, she’d be ejected from her friend group and isolated all over again, so she just pretended to be normal. To this day, five years later, her friends have no idea just how deep her obsession goes. This has caused her originally innocent interest to turn her bitter, and develop into a form of sadism, boiling inside of her, waiting to come out. This could be a useful tool for Ayano to use to her advantage.
Lastly, as one of the first rival's what I call 'key people', I'm gonna add a small tidbit on what she would be like in an ingame role. So, not to go in too deep to Kokona, she is looking for a club to join throughout her week, and also to hone some skills to impress Rentaro. On Monday, Kokona will hang out with Yui during club time, and she will try art. Obviously, in the morning, the whole group are gonna chat together, but that's whatever else they'll be doing.
But that's all I've got for Yui! Thanks for reading!
I missed the evil Haruto and evil Yui in the 20XX mode. I missed Kubz Scouts' "SO GODDAMN EVIL!" comment. I missed Sora and the rest of the rainbows in the 20XX mode. They don't belong in the 1980s mode. Yeah, block me for having an opinion lmao.
