Noodist #1 : Jade Chuacuco
I skipped breakfast for the first noodle challenge and excitedly waited for Jade in Alabang Town Center. We met sometime past 12 NN. She walked into Chatime in a goth-inspired outfit, complete with trendy round shades and Chun Li buns.
I knew Jade for over three years already. I never thought that I would actually end up working with her. We are actually in the same team. #TeamMSIB. If you are curious what Team MSIB is all about, you can send me a message anytime. She's probably one of the most organized person I have met. She reminds me of Amy Santiago at times. She loves stationaries, has a clipboard (the equivalent of Amy’s binder) and has a well-curated set of office supplies. Most importantly, she also loves Jake Peralta.
I let her, and google maps, lead the way. We had tsukemen in Ramen Yushoken for an hour and a half and she bought us desserts at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Cafe. She pointed out that their mascot, a huge bear in a garden swing, looks high as a kite.
Anyways, we started the 10 Random Questions while trying out some chocolate dipped cheesecake and brownies. Here are the 10 Random Questions she picked and her answers: (Note: These are not verbatim, there was a lot of choking laughter and undocumented discussions for each question)
Cherrie: One thing you want to be remembered for... Jade: Prof. Toby asked me something related and I said that I want to keep on doing something that will allow me to help others. I enjoy helping others.
C: Pineapple on Pizza. Yes/No J: Yes (No hesitations)
C: Thoughts on unrequited love... J: Inevitable. There are many nice people in the world that we can fall in love with unfortunately, they can only choose one. I'm a firm believer of unconditional love.
C: You now have a cult. What is it about? J: Innovation #MakingTheWorldABetterPlace
C: Optimist, pessimist, Realist. Why? J: (She actually asked me what I think she is. Based on what I know about her, she is mostly a realist. She won't hold her tongue to point out the facts and I appreciate that about her. She agreed with me and pointed out that she can be a pessimist at times)
C: You are an advocate for... J: Innovation! (She blurted it out )
C: Message for your 13-year-old self J: *This is something I'd keep between us*
C: Three dinner guests. Dead, Alive or Fictional J: (We spent half an hour or more on this question. She actually changed it to game night because she can't decide who to invite 😂 In fairness, I had the same dilemma.)
She ended up choosing these three - Jake Peralta (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) - Marshall Eriksen (HIMYM) -Jim Butcher (Author, Dresden Files Series and Codex Alera )
C: Sauce. White, Red or Pesto? J: Red! Pesto can be bland. White can be 'nakakumay'. Red can be anything you want!
and for the final question...
C: Reaction sa kissing scene ni Angel Aquino at Tony Labrusca? J: Gutom ka ba?
We talked about other stuff after the 10 questions and even went to Timezone after. I'm glad that I have learned new things about her like how much she loves Jim Butcher and his books. She also carved the heck out of the chocolate dipped cheesecake and left the chocolate coating. She prefers her cheesecakes plain.
It was a good start to the noodle challenge and I would like to express my sincere gratitude for Jade's (@jayeadeeie) support for this project. She created both my IG and Tumblr account! She was the first person I informed about the whole thing. I was extra stressed the day I decided to start the challenge and pissed by the fact that I was bored. It was good though. Looks like boredom really does sprout new ideas.
Stay tuned for my next noodle challenge and guest .

NOODLE CHALLENGE #1: Yes we can, Yushoken!
Yushoken reminded me of Obama’s election slogan, Yes We Can. A silly play with words which I tend to do a lot in my head. It’s alright if you don’t get it but I hope that I now have your attention. And yes, your furrowed brows can now be at ease.
I went from North to South to try out this Ramen place Jade (@jayeadeeie) is crazy about. I am excited about starting the whole noodle challenge but Jade’s enthusiasm added to it and quenched the doubts I have. She raved about the place earlier this week and it got me really curious.
Ramen Yushoken is one of the trendy restaurants in Molito Commercial Complex, Alabang. I came from Makati and had three options as to how I’d get there: take the bus under Ayala MRT, ride the P2P in Greenbelt 1 to Alabang Town Center (ATC) or book a Grab ride. I chose the latter.
Jade and I met in ATC sometime past lunch with empty stomachs. We walked to Molito and the place instantly reminded me of UP town center. I was told that there’s usually a long queue waiting outside but we’re lucky there’s none yesterday. I decided that we sit in the bar. I enjoy watching people in the kitchen work. I like to see how they handle the noodles and each bowl of ramen with care. It also feels like you’re at home, watching your mom create magic. The menu was on printed on paper that will later be used as a placemat. It was a menu dominated by noodles and sprinkled with options of sides and drinks.
I got Tonkotsu Tsukemen (Php 430) with Gyoza (Php 200) while Jade got Tokusei Tsukemen (Php 450) and Aji Tamago (Php 80)
I didn’t notice how much time passed before we got our order cause I was chatting away with Jade. We took some photos and discussed anything that was not work.
Finally, the bowl and noodles of happiness we’ve been waiting for arrived! Just from the aroma of the broth, I can already tell that I am in for a treat. But first, I tried the noodle on its own. It was thick and the nori sprinkled on top made a lot of difference. I swore that I could just munch on that plate of noodles and be satisfied.
Jade showed me the proper way to eat tsukemen. Take your noodles, dip it in broth and slurrrrp! The slurping part was fun and a bit messy. Nothing that a bib can’t handle though. The first bite was a surprise. The second got me hooked and the third was enough to convince me that this shit was good.
Now allow me to skip to the part where we started to slow down because there was just so many noodles and broth. We ate for an hour and a half. In the end, we fail to wipe everything clean. But we were close!
Oh, you might be wondering what happened to the gyoza and tamago. Well, they have been devoured properly in between the noodle slurping.
As we were about to finish Jade pointed out to me something written at the bottom of the menu, the policies. Yushoken is transparent about their policies. They are as follows:
No Take Out, No Delivery
Chopsticks and Spoons Only
No Modifications
Prices are inclusive of VAT and subject yo 10% service charge
Fair enough, right?
Anyways, about the food. I am pleased to present you with the Noodle Meter! I am no Gordon Ramsay but all this is based on my personal opinion and experience. 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest.
Noodle Meter for Ramen Yushoken’s Tonkotsu Tsukemen (with brief explanation) :
Taste: 4.5
The broth was amazing and strong. The meat was cooked well and does not require much chewing. So why not give it a 5? Personal preference. I usually go for something lighter in taste.
The Noodle: 5.0
I don't mind eating the noodle on its own. Whoever thought of sprinkling it with nori deserve an award. I mentioned that we ate for an hour and a half right? But the noodles did not get hard, sticky or bland.
Amount of Serving: 5.0
We did not finish the whole thing. I did not want to waste food but another bite would be pushing it. I hate it when I don’t finish my food. Originally, based on personal preference it’s supposed to be 4.5 but considering how much I spent a good amount of serving fits the price. Note that this might have been a big serving for me but not to others.
Price: 4.5
Authentic Japanese Tsukemen for Php 430. It’s not bad, considering its competitors’ prices. Php 430 can be considered splurging for most.
Worth It Factor: 4.0
It was really good and worth it with good company. However, for those not from the Alabang you’d have to find time to visit this place. This also means that you have to set aside money for your p2p ride to Alabang Town Center, that’s Php 100 from Greenbelt one. I was told that there is actually Yushoken opening up in Makati. You’d get the most out of what you spend though.
Total: 4.6
Well, I think that’s everything I have to share about my Yushoken experience. Jade and I went to have dessert after where she answered 10 random questions. That is for another post.
Note: I embarked on this project to have fun, connect with friends/acquaintances and of course, share my love for noodles.
