Konga Cafe
Authentic.
That’s the word I would use to describe the food and experience at Konga Cafe. Konga is located at 204 Ave H North and it is worth a visit.
Konga serves Caribbean food and serves it well.
Their beverages looked incredible although I didn't partake. If you visit rum appears to be their speciality. Their menu had a bunch of options I had my eye on the Goat Curry however it wasn’t available. The waitress informed me that there was Oxtail if I was looking for something a little ‘special’. I gave her a funny look and she started telling me about it and I heard the word authentic and I was sold.
When the plate was set down in front of me it wasn’t the prettiest presentation of a plate but hot damn was it delicious. It was served in such a way that you would expect it to be served to you in the Caribbean.
I dug right in and it was fall off the bone amazing. The meat was succulent and the spicing was spot on. The potatoes in the background were a perfect compliment to the oxtail and were helpful in soaking up some of the incredible juices on the plate.
Too spice up the plate if that’s something you’re interested in (which it should be because it’s Caribbean food) they have an amazing selection of different hot sauces available to you.
I highly recommend you visit Konga but please do not judge the place by your first impressions when you walk in. Judge it by the amazing wait staff and the incredible food.

Una
It was a happy coincidence that we planned to experience Una on National Wine Day. Una is a pizza and wine establishment located on Broadway.
The first thing I noticed as we were being directed to our table was:
yes folks, that’s a wine flight - a god damn wine flight. The lady at the table next to ours had one and you better bet I was ordering one as well. They had two wine flight options - Around the World and European Tour. Above is the Around the World Tour and it did not disappoint. Every table that sat down in our section noticed the table next to them with one and ordered one. It was one of the most pleasant domino effects I’ve ever witnessed.
Opening the menus warmed my heart to the social responsibility Una believes in. Check out Mealshare section at the bottom. #buy1give1
Their Mealshare Feature Pizza changes weekly so I was concerned about what it was going to end up being and the quality of the product. Alex (waitress) informed us that the feature pizza this week was a pizza with bacon and blue cheese with an apple reduction sprinkled with walnuts. YES PLEASE!
The second pizza we ordered was their sausage pizza. After ordering we had a bit more time to look around and take in the atmosphere. It’s a cozy restaurant with artwork that you can spend several minutes appreciating.
It was not until a trip to the bathroom where we fully appreciated Una’s dedication to their community. Una is dedicated to local farmers and producers and believe in promoting environmental sustainability. Most of their meal comes from Pine View Farms and as often as possible all their produce comes from Saskatchewan farms.
It wasn’t long until our pizzas came and my oh my was it incredible. It was so incredible I failed at documenting the pizza’s appearance. The feature pizza (bacon, blue cheese, apple reduction, and walnuts) was done to perfection. Blue cheese can often be over done and be overpowering in a dish but Una knows blue cheese. It was a perfect combination with the apple reduction and I’m not sure what brand of blue cheese it was but it was incredibly creamy and just an incredible experience for my senses.
The sausage on the sausage pizza had a nice bite to it (thank you fennel) but the real show stealer was the tomato sauce. Tomato sauce is often difficult to do real well but Una’s sauce was incredibly clean. It didn’t rely on excess herbs to taste delicious and less is more.
When the waitress asks you if you want in their in-house chili sauce, do yourself a favour and say yes. It has a great heat without being too overpowering. It was a perfect compliment to bot of our pizzas and it was a treat to enjoy something obviously not mass-produced.
Now normally I’m an appetizer girl but none of them seemed particularly interesting to me. The dessert menu though - holy moly. We ordered two different ones - creme caramel and the peanut butter and chocolate tartine. Both were completely soul-satisfying and an amazing end to the dining experience.
As I finish writing this I’m warming up the leftover pizza for lunch and I’m again reminded of the deliciousness from last night that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.
