- Despite how much Ed told himself he didn't care--

Zero Year/Capullo Riddler - Arkham Visit

It really is unfortunate for you that you’ve found yourself assigned to tend to Edward Nygma. A recently caught evil mastermind and terrorist that reduced the city of Gotham to a ghost of a city overrun by nature and a mad man. 

To say you were still somewhat resentful wouldn’t be entirely false. You try to undermine him, his persona, The Riddler.

Edward Nygma is just another patient. He’s just another patient in an endless list of patients; faces and identities you have encountered and have yet to encounter.

Edward leered. “Hello…nurse.” 

You could hear the slimy grin on his slimy face. 

“Afternoon, Mr. Nygma.” 

“Oh, so formal…you can call me Edward…and I’ll even permit you to call me Eddie.” 

“I’d rather keep it formal…Mr. Nygma.” You said his surname through barred teeth. 

Ed scoffed. “How disappointing…you’ll come around.” 

You rolled your eyes, you’ll come around when he’s in another facility.

Once your cart was set up, you walked over to where a steel lever stuck out of the wall. When you pulled it, it allowed Edward to lower down to the ground. 

“Tell me, how’s Gotham doing? Now that the citizens no longer have to face a battle of wits because Batman conveniently rescued them from using their brains?” 

“Gotham City’s doing much better.” You steal a short glance at him. “Thriving even.” You stated vehemently. 

“Oh please…thriving is a stretch.” 

“I’ll take it if it means I’m not cut off from the country.” You began prepping some gauze with antiseptic.

“I did stump Batman, even for a brief moment. I’ve done what others couldn’t!” 

He continued more enthusiastically, “think of it! All the different ideations! The different-”

“Mr. Nygma-”

I need you to shut up. “I can’t properly remove these stitches and disinfect the wound if you keep speaking.”

“Aren’t you capable to manage a moving patient?” 

“Aren’t you capable at following simple instructions?” 

You two locked eyes, waiting for the other to say their next quip. 

“What’re you going to do,” Edward grinned. “Gag me?”

You leaned back away from him. Appalled and agitated, but the offer was appealing. 

“If the patient requests…”

It was hard to keep down the chuckle in your chest at his surprised expression.

“Hm, funny. You do have a sense of humor…I knew you’d come around.” 

“Well, the alternative is I leave your bruises and sutures exposed, get infected, and cause much larger issues later for you. Maybe even cause some damage to that oh, so big brain of yours.” 

Probably could have omitted that last statement, but your patience was weakening.

A beat of silence. 

“So, you think I have a big brain?” 

“Mr. Nygma-”

“Edward…”

You groaned. “If you continue to obstruct my attempt to tend to you. I am authorized to sedate you.” 

“Oh…you wanna watch me sleep?”

You walked over silently to your cart and grabbed a syringe. 

“Fine! Just…do what you need to do.” 

You allowed your smile to grow proudly on your face. 

You put down the syringe. “Thank you…Edward.” 

The rest of procedure went off without a hitch, minus some miffs and grumbles from Edward. 

Riding high off the victory, as you left the room you looked back at Edward. 

Fully restrained and fully suspended up in the air. “Have a good night…Eddie.”

i make the connection because you will be kidnapped by a narcissistic freak who will put you through numerous 'tests' and 'challenges'

i feel like the typical standard for any riddler to have an obsession is that the object of their desires is also highly intelligent, though i also feel like with capullo riddler you would also have to be as physically attractive as him, in his opinion. think of gaston, but skinnier, socially awkward and highly intelligent

youre probably someone in a position of power. maybe youre an official, a detective, in forensics, etc. his initial goal is to embarrass you. he is back to his old tricks setting up some elaborate challenges. see? youre not as smart as you thought you - wait, you solved it?

the great riddler will not be bested by some lowly city imbecile!

his need to be better than everyone, including you, starts this game. he presents you will increasingly harder and more demanding challenges. at one point you probably have a bomb strapped to you.

the more puzzles and riddles you solve, the more he looks forward to these encounters. he eventually thinks that it may be because he's a loner and humans are naturally very social creatures, but this is dismissed quickly

he's not just a human! he's not like anyone else! he is the great edward nygma! the riddler!

then he finds himself making careless mistakes in everything he does. this should make him furious! it should...

suddenly, being captured isnt as bad anymore, he gets to see his 'game partner' as he's being booked in! you! he thinks nothing of this. just a little banter with someone who is almost as intelligent as himself

"ah, detective L/N! looking as sharp as ever! what did you think of our last game? ha, that hardly matters. its our next game that you should look forward to! imagine this..."

he is delusional in thinking that you enjoy his trials. you SOLVE them, because your life kind of depends on it. but this only spurs him on to make more! oh how you exhaust him. he slows down his intellectual assault on gotham and shifts more towards proving that you cannot possibly compare to him.

he's more so trying to reassure himself that he's the greatest

eventually one of the other rogues points this 'obsession' out to him as he's babbling about his next challenge for you (probably selina since she sees every opportunity to tease him)

"you know, ed, if i didnt know any better i would think that the 'great riddler' has a bit of a crush" followed by snickers and "woos!"

his face turns hot and red. this only spurs on the others more! for the first time, he doesnt know what to say. his mind is racing with explanations and excuses, but no words come out

he has been embarrassed before and it crushes him. he? the riddler? have feelings for you?

the more he sulks and ponders, the more he fears that it may be true. the sleepless nights wondering how you've solved everything. his giddiness when he sees his favorite player. the way his heart races when he speaks to you... the anger he feels when you speak to someone who isnt him. the jealousy of seeing you interact with the other rogues. the dejectedness of your disinterested attitude towards him

theres only one rational solution in his mind... to kidnap you!

you enjoy your time with him dont you? dont you hate sharing a city with knuckle-dragging baboons? dont you hate being surrounded by millions of people who dont see you for what you truly are?? a genius... just like him

his end goal is to convince you that you two really arent that dissimilar, that you are alike in more ways that you can comprehend. that you need him with you! like he needs you with him

his darling Y/N just needs a strong, intelligent man such as he to SHOW them that they would be best suited together.... no matter how long it takes, how many puzzles they go through and how many people will be exterminated if they get in the way

Also for these scenarios I’m coming up with a villain of my own, and it’s all the same bad guy, and he’ll just be referred to as “boss” via the reader, cause I can’t come up with an original villain name nor do I wanna use some of the other rogues cause I don’t want anyone to think I’m implying anything about that rogue (albeit I know none of them are opposed to hurting anyone, but no one they cared about or that was close…well to an extent..I’m just gonna drop it rip)

Riddlers x F!Reader - You Shouldn’t Have Done That

Arkhamverse Riddler: 

The loud slap from behind the door made his blood run icicle cold. 

In his mind, all the times he’d been slapped, punched, choked, and beaten by Batman played back in rapid succession. He will never admit how much those assault hurt him or how much the trauma genuinely effected his psyche. As much as he’d like the idea of someone holding his face or caressing him, he knew he’d likely flinch away in fear of being struck again. 

Now, that, that is probably what you are experiencing. He refused to have that mental and physical damage happen to you too.

Edward twisted the door knob until it was about to be yanked off the hinges. Until he quickly recovered and began picking the lock. 

He could hear you start crying softly from the thin door, but he had to remain focused. 

The door slammed open. You were on the ground, your back leaning against your boss’ desk. Whimpering, curling into yourself in the fetal position. Your boss looming over you with some proud smirk on his face. 

“See? This is what happens…WHEN YOU TALK BACK TO ME!” 

When Ed finally took in the scene before him, all he saw was red. “You won’t DARE want to find out what happens NEXT IF you HIT HER AGAIN!” 

Your boss jumped and spun around to the direction of the voice. 

“R-R-Riddler…what the hell are you-”

“That’s Mr. Riddler to you! Back away from her IMMEDIATELY! I promise you will regret what happens if you disobey!” 

“What? Her?” Your boss started chuckling. “C’mon, she ain’t worth–”

“Just goes to show how imbecilic your working cranium ACTUALLY is, and just how little you truly know…if not nothing. GET OUT!” 

Your boss was fairly new to the underworld, slowly trying to climb the ranks higher and higher. He had yet to come across any of Batman’s iconic Rogues Gallery. He never planned on it. Plus no one wanted to be part of Riddler’s games if they could avoid it. Your boss ran past Ed and out of the office, but not before Edward planted a tracker on your boss’ coattails.

The lump in his throat got bigger, his heart beat faster, and his cheeks reddened when you gave him a soft thankful kiss for the rescue. 

Capullo/Zero Year Riddler:

You were a sniveling mess. You kept trying to dry up your tears that were still falling. As you rubbed your nose along your sleeve, there was a slight sting to your cheek. 

Your boss was an asshole but you would never have thought…you didn’t even do anything wrong. You didn’t even “talk back.” You were just asking a question. 

As you made your way out of the building, officially putting an end to this shit day. You were taken aback by a man wearing a gratuitous amount of green. 

“Hellooo..” Edward was leaning against the side of his car, wiggling his fingers at you. 

Oh, shit. You forgot you were going on a date with him after work. 

Ed stood up from his car and walked toward but could tell something was off. 

“Hey, what’s the matter–I haven’t even said any–”

“Don’t!” You cut him off, “please, just don’t not today..”

“I’m sorry…I-I we’ll have to make a rain check..”

You tried to walk past him and catch a cab, but he pulled you back. 

“Ed! Please…”

You looked up at him and were shocked to see a rather stoic look on his face. He was examining your cheek, no doubt still brightly red with some lingering finger marks on it from the strike. Then bright blazing green eyes stared into your own. 

“I-It’s fine.”

“Who?”

You shook your head. Ed started walking straight towards your building. 

“Wait–Ed! No!” 

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back. Just stay here.” 

You reached your hand out in a feign attempt to stop him, but he was already walking straight into the building. 

A few minutes go by, before you know it a flood of people start screaming and running out of the building. You’re still standing by Ed’s car. Startled and confused in all the hysterics surrounding you.

Something about Riddler…something about gunshots and the boss man…

Edward strolled out behind the crowd, swinging his cane and whistling a happy-go-lucky tune. 

“C’mon honey. Let’s get your face cleaned up and I’ll treat ya to dinner, huh? I may even foot the bill this time.”

BTAS Riddler: 

Edward was anxiously shuffling on the balls of his feet. He’s never felt this way about anyone before, but he wanted to make the proper steps to court you. A good place to start he figured was leave a bouquet of flowers on your desk, with a sweet note attached to it.

However, as he made his way to your office, he rudely bumped shoulders with a taller, scruffier looking man storming out of your office. Ed was annoyed, but tried not to make a scene for your sake, as he opened your door to your office. 

Only to find you in your chair behind your desk. You were weeping, tenderly patting your reddened cheek. You look up at Edward who stood there speechless. Hurriedly, you tried to wipe your tears and fix your uniform. 

“E-Eddie…um..w-what a nice surprise..I um…sorry, sorry. I’m a little out of sorts at the moment.” 

“Y/N…darling, d-did that man who just left..”

“Edward, please!” You jumped from your seat to meet Ed in the middle of your office. “H-He’s my boss…I…I’m okay..”

“No, you’re not! No one has the right to harm you! Whether it’s your boss or the Batman!” Ed declared. He handed you the flowers and began making his way out your office. 

“Eddie, please.” You put a hand to his shoulder which made him stop to look back at you. 

“Please…just…not here…hm? I need you here with me, please?” You sniffled. 

Whatever rage was flaring his green eyes softly simmered as he looked at your soft tired face. His death grip on your door knob slowly dropped. He grabbed the hand that was on his shoulder and brought it up to his lips and kissed the back of it. 

“Of course, darling.”

The next morning at work. 

“Hey, what happened to the boss?” One of your co-workers asked. 

You stopped from getting your daily coffee to eavesdrop. 

“I heard the Riddler put him through the ringer, literally fried the boss man’s brain. He can’t walk, talk, nothin! Reduced to a full grown infant!” 

You couldn’t help but smirk behind your cup at the news. 

Young Justice Riddler: 

Edward was not always one for confrontation, especially when he knew he would be outnumbered and/or outstrengthed. If he could talk or weasel his way out of something he absolutely would. 

However, when he saw you get struck by your boss. Sure he was frozen in place but not nearly as long as he usually was.

Ed never was great at hiding his feelings for you, and this next move solidified that notion. Removing any sort of doubt you may have had left. 

“You shouldn’t have done that!” He threatened your boss. 

“Oh, yeah? And what’re you gonna do about it, sonny?” Your boss asked, condescendingly, looking between you and Ed. “Bitch deserved it.” 

“No she didn’t!” Ed snarled. “But you deserve this.” 

“Eddie?” You asked softly as you scooted over to the side of the room he was on. 

He pulled out a small device that looked like a small remote control from his jacket pocket. Before your boss had a chance to let out another smart quip, thousands of volts of electricity left the small remote control and landed on various parts of your boss’ body. Especially his face and head. 

Edward held the button down, sending more and more volts to your boss’ nervous system. 

“Eddie!” You shouted.

You saying his name broke him out of his reverie and he released the trigger. Your boss plopped to the floor like a dead weight. Every now and then he was twitching. 

“A-Are you okay?” Ed got down on your level on the floor and looked over your wounded cheek. 

You took his hand in yours and smiled softly at him. “I-I’ll be okay, especially with you around. Thank you.” You leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek. 

Now there were two unconscious bodies on the floor.

Riddlers with a Dumb!Reader Who Stole Batman's Cape

BTAS Riddler: 

You and Eddie were gasping and heaving for air as the two of you finally made it back to the safe house.

“That was a close one…” You said breathlessly. 

“Yes, it was.” Ed agreed sternly. He looked over at you, “are you hurt?” 

“N-No I’m fine, are you–”

“What part of wait for my signal didn’t you understand?” He interrogated. 

He wanted so badly to ask you that first, but wanted to make sure you weren’t hurt. He did care after all, despite doing everything he can to keep the emotion at bay. 

“I did! You said to spring the cage when you flashed your light. I saw a light and I pulled the lever!” 

“I didn’t flash any light!”

“You didn’t? B-But I could’ve sworn…oh….it may have been a glare..” You admitted in a mutter.

Ed rubbed his temples in agony and defeat. There was no use in hurting your feelings and getting you upset. “I-It’s fine, it’s fine…just another hiccu– what on earth are you wearing?” 

“Oh!” You immediately bounced back and gave a little twirl as a black cape fluttered around her. 

“Is…is that Batman’s cape?” 

“Pretty neat, huh? It got stuck to the cage and I thought I’d take it!”

Edward took off his hat and mask and resumed to rub the temples of his brain, in an attempt to ease the oncoming headache. 

Zero Year Riddler:

God, it’s a good thing you’re hot. Like no seriously, it’s one of the only reasons he keeps you around. You’re dumb enough to make him constantly feel like the smartest person in the room, and you’re an absolute treat to look at (and made for a good lay). He adored you the way someone would a cute dumb puppy, it’s harsh but it’s true. 

“All you had to do was cut the power off in the main electrical room…” Ed sighed. “It was one button.”

“B-But Eddie…there were…a lot of buttons.” You stammered. 

“I understand…but you were able to find the right one weren’t you?” He asked you, as condescendingly as possible. 

You nodded sheepishly. 

“But it was too late wasn’t it? Batman had already found you, luckily I was there to rescue you, huh? How great of me isn’t it?”

“Yes it was very brilliant of you, thank you, Riddler!” You didn’t know much, but you knew how much it pleased him when you referred to him by his moniker. 

Edward chuckled at you. Sure, you screwed up, but honestly he looked forward to it. He got to…punish you for it.

“But! I did manage to snatch this from him!” You pulled out a long black cape you had hidden behind your back. 

“Where the hell did you get that?” 

“Batman! I tugged it off of him while he was carrying me!” 

For once, the smug Prince of Puzzles was…puzzled to say the least. 

Arkhamverse Riddler: 

It was a mystery to Edward why he still kept you around. He had to work twice as hard to work around or fix your screw-ups. He constantly had to baby you and tell you not to go here or there. Please don’t touch that, don’t touch this. It was tiresome for the already on edge genius. 

However he couldn’t deny your undeniable loyalty to him. Edward knew you would be entirely lost without him. What a great man he is, right? And you would be right there by his side perfectly agreeing and clinging on to every word he said like it was the gospel. Also it didn’t help you looked kinda cute whenever you solved a riddle and smiled widely at him, or you picked the right tool he wanted the first time. 

Ed was working on another batch of riddler-bots when he sent you out to grab a few tools and materials. This was another one of Edward’s test just to see if any sort of knowledge had retained itself into your cerebrum the past year you’ve worked for him. 

Which is why what he asked for wasn’t anything of real significance. Just some wrenches, a mallet, and sheets of metal that laid to waste in Wonder City. 

Edward heard your playful humming as you made your way back into the sewers. He turned around on his barstool and away from his workbench to face you. 

“Y/N, did you manage to get the things I requested?” 

“Umm…I think so, Eddie.” You dropped everything on the floor unceremoniously. 

Ed cringed at the loud clanking of the wrench hitting a metal sheet. You did manage at least one of supplies…the sheets of metal. The rest of the items were miscellaneous at best. Rocks, stones, a tiny hammer, and a few screws. 

So much for this little experiment. 

Edward tried to keep in his frustrations. Taking deep breaths, and deciding that he’s beyond exhausted to get into it with you…again. 

“C-Close, at least you got the metal…”

“I’m sorry, Eddie. When I got there…I uh forgot what you asked for.”

“What about the list I gave you?”

You hid your hands behind your back and started childishly rocking back and forth. Avoiding eye contact with Edward, like a child that hoped if it’s parents couldn’t see them, they wouldn’t get scolded. 

Edward just sighed in defeat. He didn’t have time to deal with you or scold you about how stupid you were…you would just forget it tomorrow anyway. 

He did notice you playing with something behind your back, and a weird black cord around your neck. 

“What’re you wearing?” 

“Oh this?” You twirled around. You held it open to show it’s long length, before you wrapped it around yourself, giddily. “It’s a cape!”

Edward almost fell out of his stool. “I-Is that Batman’s cape?” 

“It’s Batman’s cape! I ran into him on the way back! He asked where you are, and I didn’t say a peep. I didn’t say a word! I watched him walk off and his cape fell off!” 

Edward began walking away from you and out of the workshop. 

“W-Wait! Eddie! Where are you going?”

Yeah, no Edward was done. The riddler bots can wait. You can wait. He was going to bed or bludgeoning himself with his own cane, whatever came easiest.

"It doesn't work! It's like asking Y/N if she would sleep with you"

"Excuse me?"

"Just because I hate his guts doesn't mean he doesn't have a pretty face."

You just had to be stuck in an Arkham padded cell. Between the both of them. You weren’t even insane, they were just overpopulated at Blackgate, but if they didn’t get you out you were going to become insane eventually.

“Y/N, tell that absolute clown-”

“Hey don’t forget handsome!” 

Edward growls in frustration. “Tell him how I’m Batman’s superior foe. How I threw Batman into hiding! How I ran this city for months!”

Joker laughs. “You’ve gotta better chance convincing her to fuck you Eddie boy.” 

“Eh..well..”

“Huh?” Both men rushed towards the wall that separated them from you.

“Please tell me you’re joking…” You hear Joker mutter. 

“I mean…Don’t get me wrong he’s a smug pompous asshole…

Unknowingly, Edward and Joker both shrug and nod. The one thing they could agree on. Well that and Batman. 

“...but he is a cute pompous asshole. Not to mention his face is totally sit-able.”

For one rare moment the Joker was actually speechless for a minute. He laments, “please tell me your joking…”

“I’m afraid she’s dead serious, my friend. As she should be. Once I no doubt escape before the clown…I’d like to take you up on that offer…”

Arkhamverse Riddler: 

“Edward, it’s not going to work.”

“Oh please, what do you know, Crane? Only someone of my parallel intellectual prowess can see the immaculate results it will produce."

Crane blinks and rubs his temples. "Edward, how is building a race course full of obstacles going to prove you're more intelligent than Batman?"

"It calls for quick thinking! He can't possibly predict every twist and turn. The moment he thinks he's solved a puzzle, another one comes right up before a moment's notice! Only a cunning genius of my caliber can pull this off." 

"I'm afraid it'll be like you trying to court Y/N to bed. It's just not going to work.."

"Ah..well…" you interject.

The two men look away from Ed's blueprints on the table to steal a glance at you. You were steadily scrolling through your phone, not lifting your head once.

"W-What was that?" Johnathan inquiries not sure if he heard right. 

You look up to the master of fear and shrug your shoulders. "I mean yeah he's a greasy egomaniac, but he is handsome in a dirty rugged kinda way." 

Johnathan blinks as if still trying to compute this new development. He looks over to Edward who has gone uncharacteristically quiet. 

Edward's face was a deep shade of red and his eyes were as wide as saucers. Riddler.exe has stopped working, good luck trying to reboot. 

BTAS Riddler: 

"Harley, hitting the toy with a mallet won't help you solve it…"

"Sure it can! It fixed all my other problems!" Harley wounds back with her signature mallet. Before she can strike the puzzle toy, Edward snatches it out of the mallet's path.

"Harley..that's cheating…"

"C'mon, Eddie! I've already tried everything! It's like Y/N sleeping with you! It's impossible!"

"Well not…impossible…" You mutter.

"Did I hear that right, N/N? You'd sleep with Ed?!"

"I mean yeah he's an obnoxious know-it-all, but he's so adorable!"  

Harley fake hurls at your admission. 

Meanwhile Ed is walking away, lowering his hat to try and hide his reddening face from the both of you.
