Spoilers for mk1! (Mainly about li mei)
I got a BIT angry...
i am so confused why is hamlet trending right now is there a tv show i haven't heard of or are we all just appreciating shakespeare's 4th best tragedy
running a ryland grace rp blog: difficult. i myself was a middle school teacher and i still fuck up about the swearing thing at least three times before i send a post. i'm studying advanced microbiology for this shit. "symptoms of scurvy" "symptoms of micronutrient deficiencies" "symptoms of long term isolation". i am ignoring light years of distance and it bothers me immensely.
running a mark watney rp blog: laughably easy. pretty sure i already have his exact speech patterns. all i gotta do is pretend to hate 70s music.
look i'm in a lot of fandoms. i have a lot of ships that are queerbait/unconfirmed/teased but never canon. hell, destiel isn't even one of my top ships anymore. but trust my words when i say that NOBODY did it like them. they arguably went canon anywhere between 0-8 times before they ACTUALLY went canon. even then the showrunners denied it. there was a rogue spanish subtitle double canon. they had more sexual chemistry than ANY erotica pairing could manage. they got divorced. they got widowed. they had a son. sorry, but your byler and your hollanov are but shadows of the real thing. it takes something deeply fucked up to make an entire website celebrate a hallucinated wedding.
okay i know we're all talking about project hail mary right now (and for good reason. the movie was GOLD.) but can i just martian post for a bit?
the crew of ares iii means so so so much to me truly. mark was their cheery guy. he was their fun, make light of it guy. it KILLS me to think about just how devastated they must have been.
i mean hell, the book basically states that he was a personality hire. (extremely qualified too, of course, but he was there to cheer everyone up. that was part of his job.)
i think when reading the martian it's really easy to get caught up in all of mark's jokes and funny moments and think he's not scared. this is by design. this is mark's way of reassuring his audience (and by extension, us,) that he's okay when he is So Very Not Okay.
and the sheer determination and stubbornness of the ares iii crew to get their little clown man back just. UGH. it guts me every time.
artemis ii is actually so special. you can go on waxing poetic about how it's a distraction, or a waste of time, or how there are "more important" things going on right now. fine. you can go do that.
but here's another perspective.
in a time when so much is falling apart, the whole world comes together to celebrate discovery. right now, this one time, we're funding science. we're sending people farther from earth than people have ever gone, and we're doing it to learn. that right there, that's human. that's curiosity.
i think it's easy to fall so deep into a pit of despair for humanity that we forget why we despair at all. we're worried about the world because we love humanity; we wouldn't care otherwise.
so yeah, seeing humans come together to do what humans do is, and should be, rewarding. it gives me hope.
