He’d known Rio was waiting for him, had seen as much on the livefeed of his security cameras. For a while, he’d considered watching her from the screen and the comfort of his couch, seeing how long she’d pace back and forth before she finally gave up and fucked off to wherever it was Rio Potter liked to find herself these days. He’d grown bored of the game after several minutes, annoyance at the feeling that he was avoiding the confrontation, and slipped into a jacket as he made his way outside.
It had grown tiresome, people demanding answers from him, questioning his decisions as though they had any right or say. She hadn’t said as much yet, but he knew it was only a matter of time. It was only with his best interest in mind. He had to fight not to roll his eyes. “What are you doing here, Rio? You know I’ve got cameras.” He nodded his head in the direction of them. “You can just wave at them next time.”
It wasn’t really a confrontation she was looking for. She’d just needed to see with her own eyes that he was okay. The blonde knew she’d been an awful friend, to so many people lately. She didn’t know why he an Alli had fought, and she could understand why Quinn had come to his sisters defense. That being said she wasn’t the Dekker, by blood if not last name, that was his best friend and she could focus on Nate. Not that Nate was her best friend either, but it was hard not to worry or care for him. He’d been along for a part of the darkest time in her life even if she’d never really thanked him or told him that. Seventeen year old Rio had been reckless and wild and willing to do anything to chase the adrenaline of pushing thins too far. Stealing a boat came to mind, and even in the after when she was drifting through life Nate had been something solid and real. Even if he hadn’t even been in Crescent anymore. So she was here to apologize for many things, but mostly she just wanted to know how he was.
Rio shook her head, “I could have but that wasn’t what I wanted to do.” She tilted her head as she looked at him. The problem was she didn’t know if he’d even noticed she hadn’t been around. That was how she liked things, that if she disappeared inside herself or in her work that they people in her life wouldn’t notice. Keep them at an arms length and things would be fine. Or that they’d be happy to be without her biting sarcasm and cynical words. “I just... I wanted to know how you were.” She looked around him and at his surroundings, suddenly feeling like she had at seventeen with his father looking at her like she was nothing but a girl from the docks. Rio let out a sigh, “I’m sorry.”
