Hi hello and welcome to my lil' literary corner of Tumblr! Call me Noct, I'll be your host for better and for worse. Beware the AuDHD because it's everywhere.

This blog is a side-blog for @tales-from-nocturnaliss and will exclusively feature writings about characters from my personal world, Aeyuu, as well as the occasional artwork, likely a lot of rb's of memes that make me think of them, and anything else that relates in any way to Aeyuu.

Please note that I write Dark Fantasy, which essentially means I write really dark stuff without batting an eye. I have no taboos (but I do have dislikes), but I also have only a very basic brain filter, which means that I cannot tag my posts appropriately beyond 'dark fantasy' (and NSFW for those rare cases).

I enjoy thematics revolving around death and tragedy and some questionable character traits, so you have been warned.

🌘 My Worlds 🌒

🔵 Tales from Aeyuu 🔵- my main flame, my very own Dark Fantasy world I've been building since 2011. The main themes are Death and Beauty, black and blue, a place of violence and blood that also yields plenty of love and hope as its people strive not merely to survive, but to live.

💌 Collab AU 💌 - a fun side-project with a good friend of mine, @haeresis-tea, that is essentially a cross of Aeyuu with her world, and with versions of Devon, Kassy, and Dwyn frolicking within. An exploration of what-ifs that turned into basically peak romances. (note that this AU will not be expanded on much to prevent confusion)

🎯 DnD AU 🎯- this is a fun side-project in which I explore versions of my peeps in a contemporary world. It started as a pure DnD party thing and has evolved into a greater world with darker issues, but it remains focused on fun. (note that this AU will not be expanded on much, but may get mentioned)

A reminder that darker fiction has a right to exist and explore themes that people are uncomfortable with. Yes, even if it's romanticized. Yes, even if you personally don't like it.

Authors have always written about things that they don't agree with morally, and I hope to god they always will, despite how shitty people treat them for doing that now.

There's also the fact that exploring dark fiction is a way to stay sane in a world that is often worse than the worlds in our heads.

These inworlds are safe environments. Even if characters can and will behave in ways that you can't control (ideally speaking!), you still have the power to alter environment, or set other characters on their paths, to avoid the worst that could happen (unless that's your jam obviously).

I enjoy dark fantasy but with a touch of hope. A balance, if you will, where darkness and death are prevalent, but where those things actually bring out the best in some people. Everybody is shades of grey, even the death entities. There are no absolutes, as in real life.

Dark fiction isn't something to be feared. It exists because darkness exists irl and some of us choose to take control of our negative feelings and use them positively. It's also proof of: hey, you have dark thoughts and it's okay, you're not alone.

I love when a character's flaws, coping mechanisms, negative and positive past experiences, trauma, past mistakes, personality, mental disabilities, mental illness, whatever the fuck else, etc. end up causing them to act in a way that isn't necessarily logical. It doesn't align with their morals. It doesn't help them get what they want. It makes things worse for them, actually, and they HATE IT. But they were never taught how to properly cope in a healthy way, and they genuinely do not know how to act any other way, and no one teaches them, so they are just stuck like this.

Being a fan of a morally grey character is frustrating because people will try to reduce them to either being an innocent little angel or a completely heartless monster and both of these interpretations just take away what makes the character interesting

Serious talk: that's exactly what I fear will happen with Devon once I do get more of his stories out there (Eventually). Because there is a lot of grey, at varying shades that sometimes border on black, and some traits of his that will make him deeply unpleasant to experience.

But the reality is that he isn't the only one who's grey: so are the events he went through, and the people whom he met, and his interpretations of the sum of his life are, in themselves, a violent array of greys.

The interesting thing, for me, will be to watch indeed what people make of him - whether they get him, whether they condemn him, or the array of options in between.

Creating a morally grey character is deeply satisfying for that reason: to watch the ways they resonate with people, good and bad. Ultimately, interpretations say a lot about the people doing the interpreting (but then I'm obsessed with psychology XD)

fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.

Literally have a few who do just that. One in particular who refuses positive change with such fervour that he keeps reeling me back in to write more as I made it my life mission to break him (and succeed, at length).

Characters can also grow more than once. If you're like me and write character-driven stories, then you can keep putting them through the ringer to develop through a series of stories that will see both improvement and deterioration - or, sometime, a strange form of stagnation where you feel like something has been learned by them, but they can't figure out what, and it only shows up later on.

I love characters who are like "I'm a terrible person" but when you look closer it's more like

"I adapted to survive something and now I don't know how to stop being that version of myself."

I adooooore fog and I'm sure it has something to do with my determining Sokyte's alt form is fog.

There's also something really peaceful to it, and to writing a pov that only perceives; that crawls, and seeps, but never directly affects.

Quite like how he was as a human, really. A gentle soul that tried to guide, but never sought to directly affect. He was there, misunderstood, sometimes disliked, yet that did not stop him from being there.

in any given fictional situation, there is exactly one character who is At Fault and every other character involved is a passive victim. media literacy is when you correctly identify and condemn this character

I looked at Dwyn and he would welcome the condemnation with open arms.

Like there aren't even passive victims because it's Dwyn. They'd be active victims of whatever torturous whimsical mood he'd be in.

I swear the lobby in my head is a battlefield sometimes. Lots of condemnation going on. Lots of chuckling, too. And forehead flicking.

Saw this reblog and immediately I thought: oh no, Devon's a bad trope 😂. Overprotective? Definitely used to be. Hates himself? Oh gods I don't wanna answer that.

Then I was about to click away and I suddenly realized Dwyn is a vamp obsessed who is neither overprotective (he'd rather use people as bait really, especially tedious humans he manipulates into trusting him) nor does he hate himself; at all. Meanwhile he's obsessed with the small intricacies of life that are psychology and luxuries and sex--okay I'm digressing. XD

Point is I had double feelings. If I throw in Kassy and her mindless homicidal tendencies that actually do have very deep roots she'll never remember, I slowly come to realize that tropes, in and of itself, aren't the issue. The issue is to make the trope the character's entire personality. Meanwhile I'm literally unable to think in tropes, I just let my characters run wild and free.

And here we are some minutes later with thoughts lol anything but editing my book. XD
