We need good men like you
AYOOOOOOO 👀👀👀
I’ve been thinking about the last few episodes of a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and something that I keep coming back to is this shot:
This moment—intentionally or not—captures something profound about the history of Westeros. Something that has huge ripple effects down the line from Ashford Meadow.
The briefest explanation for context for anyone reading this who doesn’t know the history (spoilers ahead I guess): Aegon, Egg, the future Aegon V, has one of the most peaceful and prosperous reigns of the Targaryen Dynasty. He makes his share of mistakes, but he is widely agreed to be a good king who rules fairly and justly. This is a boy who has Aerion and Daeron as his older brothers. A psychopath and a drunk. His father is cold and distant. He has every reason not to become a decent man when he gets older… but he does.
Much of that is because of Duncan’s mentorship, yes, and because from the moment we see Aegon he clearly wants to be a knight and a good man, but I think this moment, when he sees his uncle, the crown prince, put his life on the line for the cause of a Hedge Knight who protected a commoner from Aerion’s horrific abuse, is one of the key instants that propels him forward towards becoming the king he one day grows into.
Because we can all of us want to be better, we can all long to be something greater, but a big help along the way is having a moment, an experience, a relationship, that demonstrates to us that it is actually possible. I think that moment when Aegon sees his uncle Baelor ride onto the tournament field at Ashford Meadow to fight for the lowest of the low, might be the first time he realized it was possible for him to succeed at it.
And man, every time I see that shot of Dexter Sol Ansell’s face, it hits me again. What a wonderful, quiet moment amidst a bigger one. Where a kid who has every reason to grow cynical is given a reason not to be.
This is also part of why I think the occasional complaint that Baelor Targaryen’s death at Ashford was pointless misses the entire point. A lot of people in the story believed it was. Even Duncan, which is part of the reason for his grief over it… but I see that kid’s face, knowing the man and the king he is going to one day grow into, and no. Baelor’s decision to fight matters so much, because it sets his nephew on a path that one day secures the kingdom decades of peace and prosperity.
And that matters a whole lot. Even if Martin never finishes a song of ice and fire, I’m really grateful we got this story. It means so very much to me.

Leaving his Heart Behind
Prompt by: @talesofaknight here.
Premise: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms meets The Sound of Music, Dunk tries very hard to be a good novice, but the Septas despair of him, thus sending him to take care of Prince Maekar’s unruly children at Summerhall. This is a snippet of when Dunk returns to the Sept at Old Town, believing he is unworthy of the grumpy Prince and his brood of misfits.
My friend, I could not sleep, so here’s something I came up with in a few minutes coz this premise has captivated me. Sorry if it’s not so good. I tried.
Dunk, or Septa Duncan, as he will soon be called walked down the lonely road out of Summerhall, with only one of the horses be came with. He had left Sweetfoot with Aegon, because the boy loved the horse… and he loved the boy.
Tugging on Chestnut’s reigns while he walks beside him, he forced himself to walk. He knew they would be watching him walk away, and he did not want either himself or them to falter.
He didn’t want to ride, not yet. The way back to Old Town is long, but right at that moment, he knows he’s dragging his feet. Several parts of his heart was being left behind…
Seven parts exactly.
Instead of dwelling on those he is turning his back on, he starts to sing…
You must think that I'm stupid
You must think that I'm a fool
You must think that I'm new to this
But I have seen this all before
He remembers his bumbling introduction to the Targaryens of Summerhall, how the children, every one of the six looked down on him, his ugly tattered clothes, his lumbering gait. He remembers being introduced to him, how small he felt even when he toward over the man.
He sighed, it took all his considerable strength to put one foot after another. He had tried, tried so hard to give all of them love, even while shielding his own heart. But even then, it was just so easy to love them, it was easy to feel the loneliness in all of them.
Because it was the same loneliness he had felt himself for too long.
I'm never gonna let you close to me
Even though you mean the most to me
'Cause every time I open up, it hurts
So I'm never gonna get too close to you
Even when I mean the most to you
In case you go and leave me in the dirt
Dunk kicked up the dried earth underneath the soles of his worn out boots, gaze getting blurry from the dust he had stirred, at least that’s what he keeps telling himself. He was going back to the Sept, he will swear his life to the Seven.
But gods, even that is a mockery. Seven. Seven gods he will swear to, while seven souls in the Stormlands holds his heart… Six. Only six of them he tells himself firmly. He hates that he keeps including him to the number of people he is losing.
Dunk never had him in the first place, what right does he have to mourn?
But every time you hurt me, the less that I cry
And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry
And every time you walk out, the less I love you
Baby, we don't stand a chance, it's sad but it's true
What chance did he have? The man was a prince, an Alpha prince of great renown, a hard man, with a good heart. Tears were starting to form in Dunk’s eyes as he remembers all the times the prince would storm out, angry at him for something or another. The way he would still when Dunk did something that was utterly silly but nonetheless effective. The way his shoulders would tense when Dunk got too close…
It seems all Dunk had was his frowns and his back, always turned away from him — even when all Dunk wanted to do was hold on to him.
Who was he kidding? He wanted all of it. The children, oh the children! The chaos of their lives, and most especially, him. The dour, stoic prince with hurt in his eyes and his heart full of love he’s locked away since his omega had died. What chance did Dunk have against a Stormlord omega?
I'm way too good at goodbyes (I'm way too good at goodbyes)
I'm way too good at goodbyes (I'm way too good at goodbyes)
He lost his mother when he was young, Ser Arlan died and the Septas didn’t know what to do with him. Dunk wasn’t a stranger to rejection. But this was different, he was the one rejecting them, him, before they could hurt him. This was for the best he knew that, his brain keeps telling himself that, but why does his heart clench with every step he takes away from the place he had found home?
I know you're thinkin' I'm heartless
I know you're thinkin' I'm cold
I'm just protectin' my innocence
I'm just protectin' my soul
His soul. Would the gods even accept his oath when his soul belongs to those who live in Summerhall? Will the children ever forgive him? Daeron, who’s already pining for Valarr who had promised him marriage but was still silent? Aerion, who is only now learning how to love himself again? Aemon, who keeps his feelings bottled inside? What will happen to them without Dunk caring for them?
Dunk shook his head, no, Lord Lyonel would be a good mother to them. The Lord was kind, in his own way. But will he know of Aegon’s fear of thunder? Will he soothe Daella’s insecurities? Will he know how to temper Rhae’s mischievous spirit?
He didn’t know.
He didn’t know.
I'm never gonna let you close to me
Even though you mean the most to me
'Cause every time I open up, it hurts
So I'm never gonna get too close to you
Even when I mean the most to you
In case you go and leave me in the dirt
This is for the best, he keeps telling himself, even when the tears fall freely now.
The prince, he knew the prince will be alright. Who was Dunk to him after all? Just a stupid oaf of an omega, too thick, too big to be anything more than what he was. An orphan and a stranger.
A cruel one, a voice inside him whispers.
Dunk steels his heart. He is doing this for them, even if it seems like he was being unkind. They would understand, maybe not today.
Maybe not tomorrow either.
But one day.
They would have to understand.
But every time you hurt me, the less that I cry
And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry
And every time you walk out, the less I love you
Baby, we don't stand a chance, it's sad but it's true
I'm way too good at goodbyes (I'm way too good at goodbyes)
I'm way too good at goodbyes (I'm way too good at goodbyes)
No way that you'll see me cry (no way that you'll see me cry)
I'm way too good at goodbyes (I'm way too good at goodbyes), no
The lyrics of the song pierces through his heart. His steps falter as he thought of the dance, the one where the prince danced with him in the gardens, the singing, the play he and the children had staged, the children snuggling to him during an intense storm. Their scents, their sighs. Their heat.
He stills his steps.
Even though he had gone far now, with tears running down his face, he looks back. He could not see Summerhall anymore. He remembers Lord Lyonel’s words.
He was meant to be a Septa. He wasn’t meant to be with princes in castles. He needed to go.
With a heaving sigh and tears unabashedly falling, he moves to mount Chestnut. It was foolish of him to try and walk all the way to Old Town. With a swift kick, he urges Chestnut forward, even as his voice breaks as he continues his sad song.
His love song to the prince who had stolen his heart.
'Cause every time you hurt me, the less that I cry
And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry
And every time you walk out, the less I love you
Baby, we don't stand a chance, it's sad but it's true
I'm way too good at goodbyes
Bless you, my friend, for sharing my vision ✨
AKOTSK FIC PROMPT: The Sound of Music Au
Okay, stay with me on this y’all, I recently had my annual rewatch of The Sound of Music with my grandma (it’s her favorite movie of all time) and a vision came to me.
I intend on perhaps writing this fic in the near future, but if anybody else feels inspired by this prompt, feel free to use it. I’m not gonna be a d**k about it and ask for credit because, to be fair, ain’t nothing original about making a fanfic based on a movie. However, if you write it specifically because of my post, I would appreciate getting tagged simply for the fact that I would love to read it.
I’m also on AO3! My username is Andwee and this is where I post the few fics that I write (I have yet to master fic posting on tumblr tbh)
Anyways, here we go folks!
AU: The Sound of Music, Omegaverse
Pairing: Maekar Targaryen x Duncan the Tall
Prompt: Several years after the death of his beloved wife, Dyanna, Prince Maekar has all but lost touch with his 6 children. They’ve grown unruly from desperately seeking their despondent father who has adopted a military approach to raising his children. Maekar is cold and often absent, as he fills his time with travels to the Red Keep, to help his father and older brothers, as well as Storm’s End, where he has been courting the omega heir of Lord Baratheon, Lyonel Baratheon
Enter Dunk, an orphan omega currently training as a novice to become a septa. Unsure what to do with such a gentle faithful lad who speaks before he thinks and cannot stop himself from craving fresh air outside the motherhouses, his superiors send him on an assignment to become the governess to Maekar’s children.
Shanigans ensue as Dunk slowly but surely gains the trust of the children, teaches them to sing (if you’ve seen the videos of Peter singing, you know) and ultimately falls in love with the handsome fourth prince.
Additional notes : obviously for this to work, some tweaking is necessary for the ages of the characters. This is what I’ve come up with, but it’s essentially based off of the actual age of the characters/actors from the movie :
Dunk (Maria): 29
Maekar (Captain Von trapp): 35
Daeron (Liesl) : 16
Aerion (Friederich) : 14
Aemmon (Brigitta/Louisa) : 13
Aegon (Kurt) : 11
Daella (Marta) : 7
Rhae (Gretl) : 5
* yes I’m aware I mucked around with the birth order of both the Von Trapp and Targaryen children. It was for story-telling purposes because I really like the idea of two small girls who cling to Dunk because they’ve never really known having a mom and Aemon fits so well as Brigitta’s character.
Bonus: I definitely would keep in Liesl’s romance subplot and transplant it onto Omega Daeron. I could very well picture him having a secret romance with his slightly older Alpha cousin Valarr, but ultimately being heartbroken when Valarr goes on to marry Kiera (and not because he turned out to be a n*zi like in the actual movie).
