Moana (2016)

Suffragette (2015)

Suffragette, documents the turn of the 20th century women’s rights movement through the experiences of their newest member, Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), a 24-year-old laundress. And covers her struggles as she battles politicians, police and even her own husband to gain the right to vote. Suffragette is an important story, and still relevant today – so it’s a shame that this ended up being one of the most frustrating movie going experiences I’ve had this year.

Spectre (2015)

There’s something very comforting about having a new Bond film in our theaters, and Spectre, with its opening gun barrel shot set to Monty Norman’s theme music, along with a nice opening action scene and strong song by Sam Smith, gets off to a decent start. Daniel Craig wears the suits well, and as ever, looks confident and comfortable as he trots the globe in search of exotic women and nefarious super villains.

Let’s face it, Mr. 007 is cool. Men want to be him and women (don’t deny it) want to meet him!

The Peanuts Movie (2015)

This was one of my most anticipated movies of 2015, ever since I saw the first trailer back in January. And despite getting myself all hyped up for this event (even watching it ahead of the new James Bond flick), this film did not disappoint.

Our Brand Is Crisis (2015)

Comedy-dramas, ‘dramedies’ if you prefer, are always tricky to pull off. They’re built from two opposing entertainment sensibilities that seldom mix well, and quite honestly when they do seem to work, it’s because one of those elements is given priority over the other. Giving you either a drama with a few funny moments to lighten the mood, or a comedy which occasionally has to get serious.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)

Sorry folks, but Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse isn’t the bat-shit crazy adventure you were likely hoping for. It’s bloody for sure, but also tame. Filled with zombies, but doesn’t take the undead genre flick to any new interesting places. Sophomoric, but also stupidly melodramatic.

Steve Jobs (2015)

On October 5th, 2011, Steve Paul Jobs died of cancer. He was 56.

I remember hearing the news and being genuinely upset by it, because in that moment, and for a little while later, the world honestly seemed a little less interesting. Love or hate the man, and by all accounts a lot of people did both simultaneously, Steve Jobs was the Turing, Edison, and Tesla of his day. A unique individual who wrapped himself up in his own ‘reality distortion field’, and dreamt up devices that changed the way we listen to music, make phone calls, and surf the web.

Beasts of No Nation (2015)

Beasts of No Nation follows Abu (Abraham Attah), a young boy separated from his family after his village is attacked. He is subsequently picked up by members of the rebel Native Defense Force, led by their Commandant (Idris Elba), and added to their gang of children warriors.

Bridge of Spies (2015)

Okay, Bridge of Spies is a good film. An interesting true life story that touches on ‘red scare’ paranoia, and the start of the East/West German divide. Pitting ‘boy scout’ proper heroic American values against ignorance fueled fear on both sides of the Cold War. Showing us how things used to be, while slyly reminding modern-day audiences we haven’t changed a whole lot since then.

Sicario (2015)

F.B.I. Agent, Kate Macer (Emily Blunt, in an excellently restrained performance) is our eyes and ears on the ground. Swept up into a scheme that’s beyond her understand. She’s only ever operated on the sidelines, cleaning up the mess left behind by minor operatives in the drug trade between Mexico and the US. Until an opportunity to make a more meaningful impact is presented to her. Once in, she suspects the motives behind her inclusion, and what she learns challenges her faith in her country, and the law she swore to uphold.

Pan (2015)

Here it is, the ‘origin’ story! Where did Pan come from? How did he get his amazing fairy mind control powers? The world, currently saturated with mythical tales about costumed superheroes, wants to know! Or do we?
