When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didn’t want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase “peanut butter cups.” (I’m happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now). 

I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didn’t know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked “Hey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?” And she said “I’ll be right there.” And she came and got me within minutes. 

Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didn’t seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldn’t worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only ‘woman’ around that wasn’t related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked “Next time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? I’ve been craving them.” And she came and got me, just like that. 

Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Don’t discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.

fiction and reality both have complicated effects on each other. mainstream porn (fiction) often plays into misogynist & sexist cultural tropes that already exist (reality), and sometimes into the cultural conflation of violence and sex, because catering to cultural tropes is a safer bet the product will sell.

tasteful? probably not. culturally speaking, is it effect-neutral? definitely not. watching mainstream het porn has been shown to directly reinforce culturally-consistent misogynistic & sexist attitudes towards women. but blaming porn for the existence of people who commit sexual violence is absurd. not only have rapist murderers have existed for literally thousands of years, but hundreds of thousands of still-living people consume porn - some percentage of it violent - and yet there are not hundreds of thousands of rapist-murderers. 

(seriously: even if Ted Bundy was inspired to rape and murder purely by violent porn, he’d still be an outlier who shouldn’t be counted.)

the only provable, demonstrable direct harm porn causes to individuals … is porn addiction. (and one of the effects of porn addiction is reduced interest in real sex, suggesting they’re less likely to be harming anybody in pursuit of sexual satisfaction.) porn addicts need help to overcome their addiction, but for their own betterment - not to protect others from the porn-addicted serial rapist boogeyman James Dodson and Ted Bundy concocted together.

in conclusion: if you like porn with live actors, try to acquire and consume it ethically via trustworthy sources.

Two Points About the Anti Debate

One

Fiction is not very good at spreading ideas and as I’ve pointed out before it’s basically completely useless at training behavior. There’s a reason that when we spread around ideas we generally call it things like “non-fiction”, and “reporting”, and “scientific research”.

Our minds recognize that something is fictional and we have to work really hard to suspend that disbelief by creating internally consistent worlds that can trick us into feeling like we’re there. It just doesn’t have the punch to convince us to internalize an idea on its own, because it’s too busy trying to build the illusion that allows us to use it as entertainment.

And in the end, we still know it’s fake, even if we’re enjoying it. That means it has no real utility when it comes to teaching you behavior because your brain isn’t trying to accept it as an example of something real that you should actually mimic.

Actually, that last part might be a good way to show how fiction tends to evoke emotions rather than invoke them. Evocation is the idea that you are drawing something out of something else, bringing it to the surface. So a good piece of fiction can help you process your emotions by drawing them out. But it can’t really put those emotions into you.

And as a case in point, it’s a thing that narcissists can have a hard time connecting with stories that rely on evoking emotions about the social connections between people. Since they don’t see other people as fully human, they can’t empathize and so have none of the emotions that the film is trying to draw out of them.

But that’s also beside my point. What I’m saying is that you can’t watch a martial arts film and learn how to be a martial artist. Playing a FPS video game can’t turn you into a sniper. Fiction just doesn’t do a good job of indoctrinating people to any kind of behavior, it just doesn’t do that.

I’ve already pointed out that the anti argument is ultimately about thoughtcrime. They don’t want people to be able to write (think) or draw (think) or talk about (think) thoughts that they see as being impure or unacceptable.

Which means that the real problem is that antis feel entitled to control the autonomy of another person. To them, it’s acceptable to force someone else to adopt their own attitudes about what is pure and what is impure. This denies someone the ability to make those assessments themselves and thus requires a fanwork creator to obey the norm that antis are trying to establish.

It’s never been about protecting children. The arguments are never just about the stuff find people squicky, or you wouldn’t see antis attacking gay ships just for being gay. It’s exactly what they mean when they talk about fetishizing, because there’s no way to invoke pedophilia to describe mlm fiction that features adults, written by adults, for adults, so they need to find another scare word to use.

Older generations that campaigned in the same way did the same thing. Swap out the targets but the goal remains the same.

You can’t let children see positive depictions of gay men or lesbians because it will normalize homosexuality.

You can’t show people positive depictions of interracial couples because it will normalize interracial relationships.

You can’t show people positive depictions of religions other than Christianity because it will normalize devil worship.

The important point is always the same thing: You must not let people think thoughts we do not want them to think. They cannot make these decisions for themselves and will be led astray. Therefore we must make these decisions for them and enforce our will over theirs.

I don’t rest my case, but I’m sure you get the point.

This is the first of two examples provided to me this morning by @sweet-decaf-vic, a minor who clearly supports anti-shipping.

It’s relevant to this conversation, like pretty much every anti I’ve ever come across, once their beliefs are called into question they respond violently. In this case, with more claims of me being a freak or emotionally-ugly or the like.

Keep in mind the points above speak only to one of the major falsehoods that antis spread, that fiction creates reality, and the fundamental behavior they’re involved in, policing the expressions of other people. We all know that antis don’t actually stand opposed to abuse/rape/incest/pedophile glorification, or they’d actually stop grooming minors to get involved with these discussions and they’d stop providing cover for actual child abusers. And they also wouldn’t get involved in wars over ships that have nothing to do with any of those topics, but just had the misfortune to be a ship that an anti-shipper didn’t like.

Actually, that last part is kinda important. Antis are anti-shippers. I’m not sure if they adopted that name as a community themselves, but they didn’t exactly identify themselves by the supposed war they’re fighting, but rather because they were known for attacking people with the “wrong” ships. Like, say, all of the hell they’ve brought to the Voltron fandom.

It’s a weak indicator, but it does fall in line with how disingenuous and duplicitous their arguments tend to be.

Anyways, in this particular case it’s disappointing to see that @sweet-decaf-vic is a minor who clearly understand the harm done by TERFs and transmeds. It also looks like they see how harmful exclusionists are too. And yet still haven’t learned that there are no acceptable targets for cruelty and see no contradiction in being an anti, despite the kind of abuses that antis visit on innocent people.

Lying about a group of people in order to attack them, for whatever reason, is highly unethical. There are no acceptable targets, there’s no one that deserves cruelty. And when you use that to fabricate accusations against people, to lie about them, that just names it all the worse.

Don’t be like antis. Be better.

I am really goddamn tired of this bullshit about tumblrs who are “young and stupid” and “they’ll grow out of it” and “treat them gently because you were dumb when you were young.”

Yeah. I was dumb. I had some dumb opinions. Said some dumb things. Hurt some people, even, with things I said or did. You want to know why I’m less dumb now?

People called me on my bullshit.

Parents. Teachers. Friends. Adults. Peers.

When I was wrong they told me. Maybe not directly. Maybe it was silent, by drifting away until I reached for them and they were gone. Maybe it was a conversation that was TERRIBLE. That hurt on all sides. Maybe I lost friends, and opportunities, and got mad at the world.

But you know what?

I learned. If I had gone through life with everyone patting me on the head and ignoring the stupid shit I did because I would “grow out of it” then I never would have.

I would still be that dumbshit 16, 18, 20, 25 year old. And I’m sure I’ll look back on myself now in 10 years and be a different person all over again, because guess what? Adulthood isn’t something that HAPPENS to you, like reaching 18, or 20, or going away to university, and suddenly evolving into your final form. It’s a lifelong process. And it’s not one that starts when you turn 18. It starts when you are born, and it involves endless leaning from a community of peers and adults, whether that community is around you or online or happens by fucking carrier pigeon.

And about that community: There is a big fucking RIVER between not bullying young (or even not-so-young) people for things they haven’t learned yet, and passively or actively encouraging the kind of behavior that makes socially ignorant, conceited, self-righteous, mob-stirring bullies who think that being mean makes them right.

I would like to say I don’t care if they ever learn and become functioning members of a community.

They aren’t my kids.

They aren’t my problem.

I’m an adult, and I’m capable of ignoring things that I don’t like.

But while that last is true, I haven’t fallen quite that deep into the nihilistic bullshit this hellsite worships, so I DO care.

So I’m gonna say this:

Ignoring the bullshit of bloggers on the basis of their age isn’t helping them.

JUSTIFYING them to yourself and them and others is actively hurting both them and the community. Especially the people they are hurting with their behavior. If you say to someone who has been bullied “oh, but the person who hurt you is just too young to know better” you’re actively hurting people who have already been hurt, all over again.

Congratulations, you’re part of the problem.

You think you’re protecting them from the big mean world, but you’re not. You are infantilizing them and removing the culpability for their own actions and the impacts of those actions on a community they have chosen to be part of.

You’re worshiping at the altar of the made-up cult of adolescence that has made children out of young adults, who are supposed to be learning how to function in a community of both their peers and adults.

You’re confusing kindness and tolerance with patronizing indulgence and blind apologism.

If they want to act like children they can be treated like children.

If they want to be treated like adults they need to act like adults, not get a free pass.

You might hurt their feelings in the short run but guess what?

Sometimes lessons hurt.

Especially the ones you most need to learn.

tl;dr — Stop treating young adults like adulthood is something that HAPPENS rather than something that is learned. AND If you’re old enough to interact with adults, you’re old enough to have your behaviors corrected by the community. That’s literally what growing up is. Welcome. Sometimes it sucks, but it’s worth it in the end.

18th century Discourse: Women, especially young ones, are ruled by affect and lack critical thinking. Their minds are so soft and their sense of self so permeable that they identify with any fictional characters they come across, and must be shielded from sexual and morally ambiguous tales.
