Innocence
My heart was racing, I could feel it pounding in my chest as my arms moved back and forth at my sides. The rush of wind in my face was thrilling.
âYou canât catch me!!â I screamed, mid laugh at my friends who were far behind. My words echoing in the distance as I jetted around the swingset. I felt like a man on a mission, like an eagle soaring through the sky. Â I turned my head over my shoulder to peak a glance at Jeff almost falling over his untied shoelaces. The laughter escaped me before I could stop myself.
The 11:00 a.m beaming sun warmed my face as we all walked back to my house from the park, one by one they picked up the bikes and skateboards left on the lawn.
âBye guys!â
âYou better not forget to bring the frisbee this timeâ
âSee you guys at 1:30!â I called out, waving goodbye for the morning adventures. Opening the front door, I caught the smell of toasted cheese.
âTanner you better take those shoes off! you are not setting foot in my house with those dirty shoesâ mom said from the kitchen doorway, wagging her finger at me, her brown eyes staring at the already dark muddy footprint on the hardwood floor.
After kicking my shoes off, I tossed them into the closet and followed the aroma of lunch.
I grabbed the pizza from the dining room table, a quick peek into the kitchen and I could see mom was too preoccupied on the phone to notice me sneaking into the living room. Charlie followed right behind me, nose up staring at the pizza with hungry eyes and a fast wagging tail.
Ripping off the crust of my pizza I grabbed the remote and sat down in front of the TV, flipping through the channels till I got to the one I want.
âCharlie come here. Good boy!â I said patting the floor next to me. He settled his head on my thighs.
âAs you can see a mother cheetah risks everything for the sake of her cubs foodâ The TV reporter zoomed into the cheetahâs face, sharp teeth on display as the mother ponced on the prey. Charlie has slowly inched his away towards the crusts of pizza, innocently nibbling at it.
I swiftly reach under the TV stand, grabbing the video recorder so I can zoom into Charlieâs face, grinning as he drops the crust of pizza immediately and faces me.
âAs you can see a sneaky Charlie is risking his life for the sake of this pizza crust. We see here a golden retriever in its natural habitat.â
The doorbell rings echoes throughout the house and Charlie barks in response, jumping to his feet towards the door. Â
âAnd heâs off! The golden retriever is fast on his feetâ, my laughter mixes with the doorbell as I chase after him, mimicking what could be.

Regret
The smell of coffee brewing filled the apartment. Even with the blinds pushed open there was darkness filling the room, the only light coming from the red glare of  5:15 a.m. I begrudgingly flipped to the other side of the bed, slamming the alarm before it could go off in another fifteen minutes. My hands instinctively went to my eyes, rubbing them hard I started to see spots, as if that would clear away the fatigue from the previous work night.
What seemed like a second later Jeff stormed in door wide open, holding a large cup of coffee in hand, still in his pajamas.
âIâm surprised youâre even awake, thought Iâd have to throw you off your bedâ he said.
Personal space wasnât exactly Jeffâs forte but the monthly rent cheques sure made up for it.
âYou better have made me some coffee too or I swear youâre deadâ I said, my body aching as I turned to face him.
âYouâre lucky I feel sorry for you Tanner, now get your lazy ass out of bed and Iâll pour you a cup tooâ
âIâm really going to quit one day Jeff, Iâm telling you for real. Now get out of my room, it's too damn early for thisâ I said, sliding my entire body out of bed, almost throwing my laptop and folders off the bed, and headed to the shower.
After a rushed shower and two bites of stale frosted flakes, my downfall was caused by a Nissan. I jammed the key into the ignition, shaking it back and forth vigorously to try and get the damn car to start. After five minutes of frustration, the car roared to life.
I was going to be late once again. Â
Twenty-five minutes into the everyday rush hour I glanced to my right towards the faint cheering coming from the sidewalk. There stood two boys who couldnât have looked more than seventeen watching another boy attempting to use the bus bench as a skateboard ramp.
I sat there behind the wheel and gazed, a small pang in my chest as I reminiscenced when I had broke my leg attempting a very similar trick.
The ringing of several cars honking snapped my attention to the road, the lights had turned green and I watched the cars behind swerve to the left to get in front of me. Some drivers spewing a variety of colorful language out their window.
I stepped on the gas. This was the routine, it had been the routine for a while now. All the cars rushing to a nine to five job just to go back home, eat, sleep and start again.
I got into the office ten minutes late and placed my coffee mug next to the pile of documents on my desk. As I tipped back in my chair Stacy came into view. She walked towards me, her heels echoing with every step as she walked to my desk.
âHereâs this weeksâ projects. Keithâs still away this week so youâll be taking over his as wellâ she said, already walking away to the next desk, papers in hand.
She had dropped the files onto my cubicle desk, in the same place she did every morning for the past ten years.
Ten years in what was meant to be a temporary job.

Awakening
Itâs September 15th 2018, the slight chill of the morning air has my rubbing my hands together for warmth. My hands curl around the warm coffee mug, much too hot to drink yet.
Mark, the cameraman on todayâs team, is packing the jeep with equipment for the day. He turns to me with a coffee in hand as well and says âReady for your first day?â.
âI donât think Iâll ever be ready for this. Itâs been a long time coming manâ I reply, putting on my seat belt.
The drive isnât long and my brain is working fast, trying to anticipate whatâs to come, what Iâll see. Â
I step out of the jeep as my watch beeps, flashing 6:00 a.m on the screen. Half covering my eyes to see the first rays of sunshine peering over the field.
It doesnât take long before weâre to work. Â My eyes focus on a figure not far in the distance. The sunshine illuminates the elephant and then several more follow suit. The herd makes it way across the field towards the river.
âMark! Pass me the camera quick!â I say turning around to the team, who are climbing out of the jeep with the equipment. My smile forms of its own accord as I watch the majestic animals lumbering towards the river, some already taking a morning drink. He hands me the camera and I take light footsteps towards the animal until Iâm closer than Iâve ever been before. My heartâs racing as it once did before. Thudding in my chest with each step. I sense Mark and Sarahâs presence behind me following with video cameras.
I was deliriously giddy, with the adrenaline rushing through my veins as I found myself closer than ever before.
Movement catches my eye and I divert my attention towards my other side to see a group of zebras. It was after some time they decided we were not a threat to them. My eyes darted towards the smallest one, a foal standing behind its mother. He trots forward into the puddle of mudd, a respectful distance away from the elephants who are still drinking. The foal rolls blissfully in the dirt and another joins in the play. I take a step closer and come down to my knees, the grass is soft to touch, it waves and rustles in the wind. Gazing through the lens of my camera I snap shot after shot of the zebraâs as they snort at one another. My grin is wider than ever as I turn back to the elephants who have fully submerged into the river.
I tingle from head to toe, a bounce in my step as I walked back towards the jeep, ready for the next location. I felt more alive than I had ever felt before.
