Monstera Deliciosa
This big green growing machine is a favorite among plant enthusiasts. Its large perforated leaves make for a great accent piece in any room. They typically enjoy mid-sun humid environments. They tend to do well with moderate watering and regular pruning to prevent overgrowth, but if you have the space it can grow to be truly monstrous.
Some amazing women for you.
Indigenous Sovereignty in Canada
In recent weeks or even years, you may have heard of the Wet'suwet'en band and their struggle to protect their traditional (unseeded) land from colonial oppression. Over the past few weeks, the people indigenous to the territory have begun protesting and resisting the construction of a new natural gas pipeline which is set to be built through Wet'suwet'en territory without their permission.
In response to a provincial injunction issued in early November granting permission for LNG Canada to construct its so-called 'coastal gas link pipeline' through Wet'suwet'en territory, the indigenous residents of the land have prepared blockades, staged protests, and conducted sit-ins to prevent it's being constructed.
This has not stopped the RCMP, however, who have arrested nearly thirty people thus far including elders, journalists, and peaceful protesters.
The actions of the Canadian federal and provincial governments towards indigenous people, in upholding the institutions of colonial oppression, and destroying Indigenous cultural and territorial relevance, are being laid out bare for the world to see. The occupation of indigenous territory is not only immoral but has also been recognized as a violation of the most basic of human rights by international organizations and independent commissions alike.
Although the Wet'suwet'en struggle is not being proportionally reported on by traditional media outlets, it is important to stay informed and proactive. Donate, call directly upon your parliamentary representatives, and spread the word about the injustice being done unto the Wet'suwet'en people.
Useful links in following the ongoing crisis, as well as ways you can help out, donate, and learn more about indigenous sovereignty in Canada are below. I've also included the link to the contact info for the parliamentary representative for the Skeena-Bulkley Valley (the riding in which the Wet'suwet'en reservation sits) Taylor Bachrach. Autumn Reading
After a short hiatus I've decided to return with a new series of books that have been keeping my eyes and mind occupied. These reads are sure to make you fall in love with them!
Le Deuxième Sexe - Simone de Beauvoir (1949)
In her opus, de Beauvoir deconstructs popular first wave feminist ideology in a truly modern fashion for the time. It is often said, and easy to believe, that this book shaped feminist movements for decades to come - dealing with ideas of otherness, inequality, and the very notion of woman in western society. If you aren't fluent in French, the translation by Borde & Chevalier is extremely well done and certainly worth some of your time (The Second Sex).
Empire and Communications - Harold A. Innis (1950)
Predecessor to Marshall McLuhan, Innis is considered to be a pioneer in the field of Canadian communications and media theory. As a distinguished professor at the University of Toronto and Oxford University, Innis dedicated his life to studying how media influences the development and consciousness of people and entire societies within a cultural context. This book is a bit dense however, if this is the sort of thing that interests you Empire and Communications is an absolute must.
The Man Mho Cried I am - John A. Williams (1967)
The man who cried I am serves as a sort of commentary on the strife of the civil rights movement and African American intellectualism throughout the 1960s. Fictional portraits of real figures like Malcom X and James Baldwin are examined in the novel from the perspective of an affluent black American living in Amsterdam who seeks to reconstruct his past and the events that lead him to the present. While the novel is fiction, it delves deep into the very real struggle of race relations in the United States at a time when Jim Crowe was precedent. Considered to be a modern American classic, this book is definitely worth a read, or even two.
Bad Feminist - Roxane Gay (2014)
If you are at all looking to expand your knowledge of modern feminist theory look no further, Bad Feminist has everything you need. A series of short essays and speeches, this collection is both broadly intersectional and deeply personal. Gay combines and demonstrates how things like gender, class, race, and sexuality interact in modern western society through a series of real life situations and experiences that serve as a good introduction for anyone looking to broaden their horizons on these topics. I couldn't recommend reading this book enough, please indulge!
Two Solitudes - Hugh MacLennan (1945)
This novel, which won the Governor Generals Award for English Language Fiction, is considered to be one of the most influential pieces of literature when it comes to Anglo-Franco relations in Canada. It follows the story of a member of parliament throughout the first half of the twentieth century and how he deals with his heritage and position in society. The term 'two solitudes' ¹ was even popularized by this novel and is still a popular concept in Canadian politics today.
¹This term refers to the historical relationship between English speaking Canada and French speaking Quebec since confederation.
Juniperus Procumbens
The Japanese juniper (sometimes referred to as a bonsai), is a beautiful and full shrub. They tolerate drought, shade, sun, and lots of moisture, so they may be placed anywhere. They make for splendid ground cover and do very well outdoors. Once they are planted outside, they should be fed in the spring and placed in loam rich soil to ensure they live to their fullest potential.

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine
Be warned; the cover art for this album is rather graphic but do not be fooled. This 1991 record is the first of many bombastic and political albums in the band's discography. From wealth inequality, to police brutality, to white supremacy, the band tackles many social issues with an extremely blunt tone. If you are politically aware in any respect, this album might scratch an itch you didn't even know you had. Favourite Songs: Take the Power Back, Killing in the Name, Know Your Enemy
Note on Cover Art: The cover art for this album is a depiction of Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức [self immolating] in protest of the administration of Ngô Đình Diệm. It was taken by Associated Press photographer Malcolm Browne in Saigon on June 11 1963.
Lithops
This adorable succulent, also known as a 'living stone' or 'butt plant' is a great addition to any houseplant collection. They enjoy warmth and lots of sun, be extremely careful not to overwater them though - during their dormant season (autumn to spring), they are not to be watered at all. in the spring they may be fed with diluted cactus feed to promote healthy and happy growth!
Ocimum Basilic
Basil is a relatively unparticular herb that enjoys lots of sun and most temperatures. They should be harvested regularly to promote healthy growth and new stems. They may be kept indoors or out, be sure to keep them out of the frost though!
Piperaceae Lemon Lime
This adorable little 'radiator plant' will make for a great addition to any household plant collection. A generally easy going friend, this particular peperomia craves indirect sunlight and relatively little water. Make sure to place them somewhere nice and warm!
Summer Listening
Now that the long draw of winter is finally coming to a close, this summer demands a decent soundtrack. No matter your taste, there is something here for everyone.

Ctrl - SZA
Rhythm and blues singer-songwriter SZA outdoes herself on her debut album, Ctrl. This album offers the perfect set of songs that, coupled with her amazing voice, are sure to compliment your summer perfectly. Favourite songs: The Weekend, Supermodel, Broken Clocks

Education in Crisis
On February 1 2021, Laurentian University (Sudbury, Ontario) declared insolvency in accordance with the 'Companies Creditors Arrangement Act' or CCAA. This announcement came out of the blue to students and faculty in the wake of mid-term examinations and the annual February reading week. In essence, this declaration of insolvency came about because of roughly two hundred million dollars in unpayable debt on behalf of the university - something it has lamented for the past several months.
In the wake of this declaration and the subsequent CCAA process, Laurentian has discharged nearly one third (1/3) of its faculty, including professors, and has cut 69 of its original 170 programs to date. This is not to mention that there were a number of graduate programs that were disrupted, as well as the premature ending of contracts with the federated universities (three small universities under the umbrella of Laurentian that made up a substantial portion of their programs and faculty).
What Does This Mean for Students?
After failed negotiations with the provincial and federal governments to acquire loans and subsidies to help lessen the impact of the CCAA process on Laurentian's students, one thing has been made abundantly clear: the student body at Laurentian is not a priority whatsoever. Thousands of students have already had their programs derailed or altered, and their quality of education made much lower - without a reduction in tuition costs at that. While the top faculty at the university enjoy generous salaries and bonuses, the students that make their very livelihoods possible are being told to kick rocks. International students, no plans. Domestic students, no plans. Graduate students, no plans. The disregard for student wellbeing throughout this insolvency process is moronic and downright disrespectful. It is safe to say, now that the first of three phases in the CCAA process is complete, Laurentian students (of which there are nearly 9000) had ought to leave and leave fast. The quality of your education is going to plummet, your course and program selection will be severely limited, and funding for high requirement programs will most likely evaporate.
With the situation at Laurentian University worsening, it is important to reflect upon what caused this in the first place: financial recklessness, greed, and elitism. The insolvency crisis at Laurentian should have never happened, but now that it has, it is disproportionately affecting students and staff who had nothing to do with Laurentian's financial woes. Those at the top, the academic senate and chancellors, including dean Robert Haché, and former dean Dominic Giroux, get to walk away without so much as a scratch. All those responsible for this crisis should be held responsible to the fullest extent permissible.
For more information on the crisis at Laurentian, visit the links below. Sign petitions should you see them, and support the causes of Laurentian staff and students trying to make a difference.
Sincerely,
A Laurentian University Student

Summer Reading
This summer will certainly be one for the books! You may be familiar with some of these writings, but there is certainly something here for everyone. These are some of the works we have been in love with recently;
The Will to Change - Bell Hooks
In this amazing read on modern feminist ideology Hooks takes a breath taking approach to the issues that face men today through a specifically feminist lens. For anyone interested in expanding their contemporary feminist collection, definitely give The Will to Change a few hours of your time.
Separate but Unequal - Frances Widdowson
Looking for an introduction to indigenous studies in Canada? Look no further. Separate but Unequal is a great (if lengthy and dense) introduction to the liberal ideology of parallelism and how it adversely affects Canada's indigenous population today. It also acts as a historical case study into Canada's past policies geared towards indigenous people, and warns of the harm that keeping these policies in place will do.
Women, Race, & Class - Angela Y. Davis
In her seminal work, Davis explores the intersectionality of the issues of race, gender, and class in a socially depraved America. She makes the case for socialism on the grounds of the black liberation and women's movements of her era - a compelling and intricate argument to say the least. If you you are looking to study the origins of leftist radicalism in the United States, Women, Race , & Class is a great place to start.
The Inconvenient Indian - Thomas King
In this best selling opus, the wrong doings of Canadian (and American) colonialism and expansion are on full display. King provides in depth historical accounts on the atrocities committed against the indigenous people of north America and their ramifications today. It is brutally honest and blunt, a reminder of what got us all here today.
Gender, Identity, and Place - Linda McDowell
In this work of her many, Linda McDowell presents the reader with insightful and thought provoking conceptions of gender and geography, as well as their intersection in turn of the century political thought. While it is not necessarily as developed as most modern feminist writing, it is thorough and expansive - the perfect read for someone who wants to step outside eurocentrism in political thought.
(Being and Nothingness)
Aloe Vera
A succulent, Aloe enjoys arid soil and lots of sun. You may use aloe to soothe burns or even eat if prepared properly. Be diligent not to overwater them though, standing water is your Vera's worst enemy!
Piperaceae
The peperomia frost is a cute and subtle houseplant that adores mid-light situations. This coupled with his relatively easy maintenance needs makes him the perfect friend for anywhere you need him in the house.
Dracaena Marginata
A beautiful plant of two colours, the so called 'Dragon Plant' is a great addition to any home garden. Taking non-direct sunlight and negotiable humidity levels, this Dracaena is an easy going colourful companion.
Schlumbergara
The humble Christmas Cactus (or Easter/Thanksgiving Cactus depending on the blooming period) is an adorable addition to any houseplant family or garden. Make sure he gets plenty of sun and water though - along with a turtle friend to keep him company.
