Am I missing something?
I've seen, quite a few times now, people saying that Erik in Phantom of the Opera is weird cuz he like "groomed" Christine. And acting like it took years.
CANONICALLY that's Not true. Like, what version are y'all reading? I've read the De Mattos & Ribiere translations. In Both of those, he's known Christine for months. 6-9 MAX.
He didn't get her while she was underage/in school. And he didn't go into this looking for a relationship. There's actually no fucking evidence of that anywhere in Leroux's novel (unless you know something from like the original French novel that's not in any of the translations that I have)
Her father died, Madame Valerius put her into the Paris conservatoire, she got accepted into the Opera Garnier.
She admits that she'd lost herself after her father's death. Raoul says that at the conservatoire she was like a souless, singing automaton. The ballet girls point out that a few months ago she was bleating.
Christine is NEW at the Opera. She's not some longstanding primadonna like Carlotta. She's like freshly 20yo.
Erik doesn't even call himself the Angel of Music until SHE asks if he is.
He just asks if she'll allow him to teach her.
Obviously Erik saw a sad, lonely new girl and offered help.
He goes quiet the day she mentions Raoul because I think it hits him that he's developed feelings. He comes back the next day and tells her that he can't keep teaching her if she's in love with someone else. He admits after he kidnaps her the 1st time that he fell in love with her.
Before that, he was fully committed to living his life in isolation, mildly harassing the directors and working on Don Juan. His PLAN was to finish it, lay down in the coffin and die, NOT to kidnap anyone or get married.
Did he manipulate her, yes? But grooming?

If they met in the novel
Tolkien and Crichton with dialogue tags
Painted shoes
things I wonât let ai take away from human writers
em dash
ânot x, not y, but zâ
short sentence stacking as a stylistic choice
none of these belong to ai. these are all what human writers have been writing since day one, way before ai was invented. ai was trained to mimic how human writers write â so em dash, not x not y but z and short sentence stacking would never have been used by ai at all if ai hadnât learned and mimicked them from human writers.
no, you are not âfighting against aiâ by accusing every work that has em dash, not x not y but z or short sentence stacking in it as ai-generated, you are helping ai harm the writing community by engaging in witch hunt and scaring human writers away from creating/sharing their works for fear of being wrongly accused of using ai.
speculations, accusations and ai witch hunt harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
Working on another Phantom of the Opera fanfiction đ

I Am Dragon theory
What's going on with that whole system?
It's gotta be a curse, right? Like someone pissed off a wizard or something and That's why this one very specific village is plagued by the dragon.
The dragon lives on a giant dragon skeleton island that's protected by a magical barrier where the only people who can find it is someone who has a woman that loves him waiting for him. That's curse logic.
And the island is like, tropical, out at sea. Where as the village is landlocked in a frozen tundra type biome. So the ritual/song summons the dragon through some kind of portal or something because he shows up in like 3 minutes. There's no way his flying fast enough to get from a tropical island far out at sea to that landlocked frozen village that fast naturally.
Also, Someone obviously taught the village this song.
And the dragon's method of reproducing is just to burn the women and a baby boy pops up in the ashes, continuing the cycle. That's like, a bloodline punishment.
I think that village, or at least the original guy who became a dragon, pissed off a wizard and got cursed. And the village was either also cursed, or they're just the means of sustaining the curse because the dragons aren't immortal and so they needed to be able to continue the cycle.
