Ten of Swords

There is a misconception at times that Death is one of the most unfortunate cards one can pull from the tarot, but this is untrue. The Ten of Swords holds that title. It is one of the darkest cards of the tarot, with some of the most disturbing imagery. A man lies upon a beach, ten swords pierced through his back, with blood pooling from his head and a deep black sky above. On the horizon the sun is either rising or setting, and the sea is calm. The card symbolizes a terrible crushing defeat, betrayal, depression, drama. Because of the extreme imagery, the emotions it is associated with are usually extreme as well, which is why it is so distressing to pull in a reading.

Two of Wands

The Two of Wands is a card about future planning, decisions, preparation. The man depicted looks out into the world while holding a globe in one hand, and a staff in the other. Behind him, another staff is affixed to the ramparts he stands on. He intends to set forth from this place of comfort and security, to venture out into the world, but he is still in the planning phase of his decisions. Thus the card is about planning and making decisions before moving forward.

The Chariot

The Chariot is a card about confidence and willpower, and the victory that comes from having both. It is about the force of one's will being able to drive one forward, to being able to achieve the impossible, and is reflected in many details of the card. The sphinxes in front of the chariot are two creatures of mystery, but they have neither reins nor harness--the charioteer does not need either, for they bend to the force of his will. The charioteer's own body is fused to his chariot, he is the chariot, and the chariot is him, all a vessel of movement. He wears a starry crown, and his canopy is decorated with stars, showing a sense of ultimate, nearly divine purpose to his task. This stone chariot with unharnessed sphinxes have managed to cross a river, which shows that despite all odds, the charioteer's sheer force of will and determination has made him succeed a seemingly impossible task.

Nine of Cups

The Nine of Cups depicts a gloating man, most likely a merchant, proudly displaying his golden cups behind him. It is a sign of wishes and desires fulfilled, especially ones that you may relish in. Success, being proud of one's achievements, attainment, are all meanings linked to this card. You want it? It's yours, or soon will be. One thing to note though is the modest wooden bench he sits on compared to the other wealth around him: this success can be transitory, and may increase or decrease in the future.

Ace of Wands

The Aces represent the ideal of the suits they belong to. The suit of Wands is connected to the element of fire, and thus passion, creativity, energy, potential, growth, and new ideas. The Ace of Wands is a symbol of pure inspiration, the moment when a new idea explodes into your mind and lights a fire that causes you to put all of your energy into it. It can also mean a new passion, whether in a relationship sense or other ventures.

Five of Pentacles

The Five of Pentacles of one of the heavier, more depressing cards in the tarot, evident in its heavy gray tones and the ragged people that walk through the snow. Among its meanings are illness, loss, struggle and hardship, poverty, isolation. But even there there is a ray of hope, a silver lining if you will. Above them is a stained glass window filled with light and warmth, while one of the couple is looking up at it, and the other is turned away. Help is nearby, and the couple may either be heading their way towards it, or they may be so focused on their misery that they miss it entirely.

The Fool

Starting at number 0, The Fool is the beginning of the tarot, and thus represents new beginnings and new ventures. More than that, though, The Fool symbolizes the emotions and mental state that lead to new beginnings: optimism, creativity, idealism, spontaneity, innocence, and the little bit of foolish bravery one needs in order to start something new. This card is usually a positive one, the prominent yellow color showing happiness and adventurous spirit.
