Was browsing on Pintrest and found this vintage cover for a (what I am assuming) pulp fiction novel. Immediately, my brain went: Tower Princes. This was a lot of fun, I just gave up on the background.

WIP of a young Abigail Pent. Edwardian clothing just strikes me as very Fifth house, with how intricate it is and how regal the silhouette is. Even a ‘casual’ outfit for Abigail would make a certain nun look shabby and underdressed.

oh god i’d heard about the “i won’t commission artists who undercharge for their art” post and now it’s making its rounds on my dash.

please understand that this concept does not actually help anyone. the sensible thing to do if an artist is undercharging is to tip them for what you think their work it worth, and be sure to let them know that. even if this doesn’t cause them to actually change their base prices, at least YOU’RE paying for what it’s worth, and THEY’RE getting business instead of nothing.

by essentially boycotting artists who are already unsure of the value of their own work (and are thus underpricing) you’re not sending any positive message. no one is going to up their commission prices when nobody is buying them. the only thing the artist gets out of it is that people don’t want to buy their art for some reason, and people who’s products aren’t selling aren’t going to say “oh i guess it was because i wasn’t charging enough, i’ll pump up the prices!”

if you want to support a commission artist, please do it by actually SUPPORTING THEM WITH COMMISSIONS rather than by choosing to take your business elsewhere because their prices were too low.

This series is based off of the tropes from a teen movie, specifically John Hughes’ teen movies. If you’ve ever seen The Breakfast Club, all of the kids sign off on a letter to the principal and assign themselves these tropes. Since Fantasy High is heavily inspired by John Hughes’ movies, I thought it would be fun to have a series where each of the FH characters is assigned to these tropes.

The Brain, portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall in The Breakfast Club, is pressured by his parents to be the best he can in school. He doesn’t fit in with the rest of the kids, even though he befriends them over the course of the film. He’s extremely intelligent, upright, and put together, to his detriment in the eyes of the others. Even though he does irresponsible or morally grey things, he views them as a net good, since he doesn’t use them for anything harmful (in his opinion). Extremely observant, he can clock things about others than people normally don’t catch.

‘The Athlete’ was portrayed by Emilio Estevez. Initially, he was a stereotypical athlete and bully. He was raised to follow in the footsteps of his father. Over the course of the film, he learns to accept himself as he is and to not care what other people think of him so much.

Another WIP! This year, I’m trying to be more comfortable with posting WIPs. I used to rarely to never do it, because I want my art to be perceived as polished. But now I don’t really care. I wanted to play around with anatomy and light here, and I love how she’s turning out.

BRYCE

Last of the gifts I made for my coworker! I haven’t read all of crescent city but Bryce is my favorite character design out of the SJM protagonists. I also got sick of people drawing her too pale and too skinny so I wanted to give her an appropriate body type to how she’s described. I also wanted to give her actual bronze skin, but just a slight tan (if that). No shade to other artists, darker skin is just more fun to color.

Part 2 of secret Santa for my coworker. I wanted to keep Feyre’s features much softer than Aelin’s, and I always imagined her with this cute button nose. Her hair color was so hard to get down because what even is “golden brown”???

AELIN

Part 1 of my secret Santa gifts to my coworker. Her favorite author is SJM so I drew all of the main characters from each of her series starting with, of course, Aelin from Throne of Glass. I wanted these to have ‘official oil portrait’ vibes like you would find in a castle. The illusion I wanted was for it to have an oval golden ‘frame and nameplate’ when it was actually framed. I think it turned out pretty cool!
