Caretaker and Whumpee are friends who often sleep in the same bed for whatever reason (comfort, closeness, not being able to afford another one but also not wanting one of them to sleep on the couch). Usually neither of them would wear much. Just their underclothes, or maybe even sleep completely naked, as both of them are prone to overheating.

Then they stop living together, or Whumpee goes away for a while, but when they're re-united and they resume their old set up, Whumpee always stays fully clothed when they sleep next to each other. It's not really that weird of a thing, but Caretaker starts to notice other things are off, too. Whumpee is always tense, they don't cuddle like they used to, Whumpee's eyes suddenly become fixed and alert whenever Caretaker strips off to sleep - just sleep - in their bed.

It's subtle, but the evidence is there. So while Whumpee lies awake at night panicking and re-living things silently in their mind, Caretaker lies awake and wonders if something really bad might have happened while they were gone.

god this is good, the habitual bed sharing between friends, the casual intimacy and little-to-no clothing that was just normal between them. cuddling as they fall asleep, or waking pressed together, someone's hand reached out and resting on the other's hip, face tucked against the back of their shoulder, legs hooked together. it was so... normal. it was routine for them.

and then after this break, after they return to this habit, and things are different. things have changed. it is so clear that whumpee doesn't feel safe anymore, and it's becoming frighteningly clear what they're afraid of. it's not entirely set in stone but... the math adds up. caretaker's heart hurts in their chest with the way whumpee watches them, regards their body and its proximity as a threat.

the fact that they still do this makes me crazy. does whumpee think they have to? do they think they can't ask not to sleep like this anymore, they can't say no? or is it that they really do want this piece of normalcy, this normal, grounding intimacy back, they're just fucked up now in ways they weren't before. are they angry at themself? do they wish they could roll over and bury their face in caretaker's chest like they used to, feel their skin press against that of this friend they trust so much?

it's becoming increasingly untenable. they aren't sleeping well. caretaker is clearly noticing something is wrong. they think... they think they're going to have to talk about it. about what happened. about whumper.

"wha- what's happening?" whumpee asks, wrapping the blanket further around themself.

Accidental trauma reveal my love. When friends or enemies unintentionally discover Whumpee’s tragic background. For instance

The classic nightmare scene. Whumpee has never slept with people close by for this very reason. Unfortunately, they don’t have a choice this time, and they do, in fact, scream (or cry) in their sleep, in front of someone/everyone.

The person behind the trauma suddenly reappearing in Whumpee’s life. Whumpee losing it—running away, hiding, refusing to engage with anyone. Or even better, trying so hard to pretend they’re okay until they just. Shatter.

Truth serums, spells, and items. Flippantly asking Villain, “Why do you keep doing this?” only to get a gut-wrenching answer in return.

The mind probe. Whumpee is sick/unconscious, and someone does the magical mind probe (I swear this comes up so much in media) to figure out what’s wrong and stumbles on Whumpee’s tragic past.

Teammates unknowingly triggering Whumpee for a while until Whumpee finally just screams it out. The looks of horror.

Also shout out to intentional trauma reveals. For trusting the found family enough to tell them the things that hurt the most.

Any other tropey goodness that results in Whumpee finally getting the comfort they deserve.

pain-in-the-everywhere

give me a whumpee who experiences so many things that should be whump, but for one reason or another never quite reach that far.

they're in a car accident, but it's okay. the car got beaten up a bit, but they're fine. no one got hurt. they just have to replace the door.

someone starts having a go at them on the street. randomly, loudly. they're getting right in whumpee's face and whumpee thinks they're going to be attacked, but then the stranger gives up and walks off. everything's fine.

they overdose. accidentally or intentionally. they should die, right? nope. a stomach ache and a frankly embarrassing crying fit in front of the doctor. they're free to go home in a few hours.

they find a man lying on the ground, unmoving, no obvious breathing. his hands are discoloured and purple. he's dead. they've found a corpse— aaaand nope he's just really fucking drunk and passed out.

after a while whumpee stops getting pissed that these inconveniences are happening, and gets angry that they aren't going further. they don't act like someone who is fine, why won't the world give them a reason to do so?

when they first started dating, whumpee asked to take things slowly. they thought they'd be ready by now

so when their partner tries to start something, whumpee plays along and fights the bile rising in their throat. they let their partner take their shirt off, their hands wander whumpee's body and whumpee still tries to keep it together.

"what's wrong?" their partner asks. "do you want to stop?"

whumpee shakes their head and tears fall down their cheeks, "i'm sorry, i don't think i can do this anymore."

It’s 3 AM, but fuck it, we’re being domestic | Prompts

Alternatively, just some fluffy domestic romance prompts, but they feel more cute when they’re in the middle of the night because one or both of the ship characters are insomniacs.

Dancing together in the kitchen, in the refrigerator light, and then sitting on the kitchen counter, eating ice-cream directly from the carton.

Walking barefoot on the dew covered grass, hand in hand, under the stars.

Sitting on the floor trying to piece together IKEA furniture because one person got obsessed with finishing it the same day.

Middle of the night cooking, except it’s making the weirdest most absurd dishes imaginable, just for fun.

Making love, except it’s on the bedroom floor.

Cleaning cupboards or attics and finding lpppittle mementos, childhood pictures, etc and talking about memories.

Midnight drives with street food pit-stops and making out with the car radio playing in the background.

Tossing a smiley stress ball around the house watching it knock into furniture— Bonus, if one person is tossing it and another is scrambling around trying to make sure no furniture falls over, causing squabbles.

Gossiping about annoying relatives/friends, parents etc.

Making each other coffee, except the rule is: adding all of the other person’s favorite ingredients PLUS one mystery ingredient which might be good bad or ugly. For funs~

Late night massage sessions because they’re old (they’re not even thirty. Maybe they are.) and their back huuurts.

Ramp Walk/Modelling sessions where one person tries out every single outfit in their closet, and the other one rates or judges them all and gives (mostly useless) opinions.

Doing laundry except they can’t put the clothes out for drying because there’s no sun, so they spread them all over the furniture (only the stuff that doesn’t go bad with the water-) and switch on all the fans.

Weird selfie poses and filming random tiktok dances.

Alternately, sitting side by side on the bed (or the floor—) deleting old pictures from their phones to make storage and laughing about embarrassing old pictures. (A “my phone might die of lack of storage but that super embarrassing picture of yours from six years ago isn’t going anywhere!”)

One of them randomly googling super random shit and telling those facts to the other person, and the other one, super sleepy, just nodding along to everything.

Painting dates where either both of them are amazing artists or neither of them are, (or one is and the other isn’t) and they switch canvases periodically to finish each other’s paintings. (Chaos for the ones who can’t paint, and two beautiful art pieces for the ones who can~)

Alternatively, one is an artist and the other models for them while being utterly sleepy bc Artist has insomnia :D

One is a musician and keeps the other up all night with the music. Or alternately, the partner has insomnia and the sleepy musician plays them something to pass the night (and what if it turns out to be a lullaby-)

Turning the junk, broken and useless stuff in their house into a rage room for the night.

Learning crocheting from YouTube and making each other weird little woollen mementos. (Could go for anything really. Learning shit with esch other in the middle of the night from YouTube—)
