Hello guys,
I know I have been absent from here for over half a year. I got a very busy freelance job (I had to move ca 10 hours away) before Christmas last year and they just prolonged my contract month after month, which was very good for me (income).
But now I am back, and here is my latest finished commission!
Pointer dog, made from supersculpey polymer clay, painted with acrylics. The base is made with hot glue, rocks, silver foil, fabric etc.
About 15 cm tall. Took me about 2 weeks.
Lots of fun! Hope you enjoy it!
By the way, I heard about a sculpey type (premo?) that stays flexible after baking, does anyone know how working with it is compared to supersculpey?
I’ve been asked a lot about tips for aspiring animators, so here are some ! Enjoy, I hope it will help some of you.
Oh, and for the ones wondering who I am, I’m a french 2D animator. I studied animation at Gobelins like 10 years ago and ever since I’ve been mostly working as a 2D animator for feature films, commercials, shorts and shows.
Woke up at 2am and couldn’t fall back asleep so I made a tutorial on the Photoshop techniques I use most frequently. Starting with the sketch:
adjustment layers: specifically the hue/saturation slider in this case, allows you to color correct quickly
lasso tool: for sharp edges!
alpha lock: useful for painting within a pre-defined area (especially useful when painting characters)
x (hotkey) : toggle between foreground + background colors- let’s you easily blend between 2 colors
ctrl/cmd click : quickly change current active layer. Especially useful if you’re burdened with too many layers (or just very disorganized)
clipping mask: similar to alpha lock, but can add details without changing/ painting directly on the previous layer. I often use them to test out + apply gradients.
layer styles: I didn’t use any in this image, but the possibilities for layer styles endless, from simply adding a quick outline (useful for die cut demarcations when making stickers!) to creating more seemingly complex appearances. Here’s a gif of Nick Carver using layer styles (a combo of drop shadows + inner shadows) to quickly make the illusion of snow but with simple strokes.
ending on this:
Awesome
This week I’ve prepared some tips for everyone who is confused with arms. I know that pronation and supination is confusing and I recommend to learn in by heart <3
I have also announcement!
The day is approaching when I will release ebook or Gumroad PDF with all my anatomy tips + additional lessons + commentary.
I still am thinking how I will publish this but it will be done. Anyone who’s interested finally will be able to get everything in one place and some more good content. I will post some dates soon so look for that in next few weeks !

A portrait of Annette taken February 2001, when I had my own studio in Honningsvåg, Norway. Taken with an old Hasselblad 500C on Kodak Ektachrome 100VS.
(Warning, the beginning is a bit brutal…) Here’s a time lapse showingthe process of drawing a creature in the same way I did the pokemon: sketch -> ink -> watercolour Hope you like it!
Pose to Pose and Straight Ahead explanation, along with combo. Material coming soon for my upcoming 2D animation tutorial package.
