Her first instinct was to call bullshit. A part of her had wanted to hear that answer, but how could it be true? They’d barely spoken in five years. If he came back for her, it didn’t make sense why he hardly bothered to keep in touch. Guarded as ever, she was frozen in spot, trying her best to come up with a way to brush it off. She wasn’t about to let herself feel happy at that answer, because even if it was true, he had done a shitty job of following through. “You should’ve just stayed gone. I was fine without you, I’m fine now. I don’t need or want you.”
“Fine,” he said with a tight-lipped smile. “Whatever you say, Acacia. I’ll leave you be now; have a nice life.”
“Always the cheeky one, mm? I’m not too worried about my good looks, I’m hung like a horse, after all.”
“That’s fantastic to hear, Dax. Glad I’m not the only one.”
“No, it wasn’t enough. Excuse me for still being bitter that the person who was supposed to be my best friend disappeared during the worst fucking year of my life. You have no idea what that was like and you never will. It doesn’t matter that I knew, it didn’t make it hurt any less. I don’t even know why you bothered to come back if this town is so fucking horrible, clearly there was nothing here for you.”
“God, I came back for you!” he yelled, the truth slipping past his lips unwarranted. He took a step back after a few moments and averted his gaze, shoving his hands deep into his pockets. “I came back for you,” he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper this time.
“Have you done something to offend me? Is that a fucking joke?” She raised a brow, immediately jumping on the defensive. “Please tell me you’re just playing dumb.” Acacia scoffed, shaking her head in disbelief. “Honestly, fuck you if you don’t think there’s a reason I should be holding a grudge.”
“Fuck, Cay, is this because I left almost five years ago? It’s not like I left without telling you, and you knew damn well why I was leaving! Am I supposed to be apologizing for trying to get out of this fucking town? Oh, please, almighty goddess of ‘how the fuck everyone should fucking act all the fucking time’, show me the way! Because apparently coming back to this god forsaken place wasn’t enough!”
It had been an unbearably slow night, minus the almost brawl between Tom and Dave he’d had to break up, and he was ready to call it a night. The few lurkers had finally trickled out after last call, and he was cleaning up a shattered glass Tom had thrown against the wall when he heard the door open. Without looking up, he continued his clean-up. “Pub’s closed.”
“Saved by the Bell- Tate. Stop being so elitist, dude. You know vox populi equals vox Dei. And vox populi says Veronica Mars is better than Saved by the Bell. I didn’t make the rules, bro, it’s all on IMDB. Oh, David Copperfield is kind of cool. And don’t be gross, T, Kelly Kapowski could be your mom with her age. Don’t be the gross dude.”
“I couldn’t care less about what vox populi says; Zack Morris got me through a lot of tough times, and I’ve never watched Veronica Mars, so Saved by the Bell wins by default.”
“Truth hurts, darling. Just like beauty hurts. First thing all girls are taught.”
“Well, I feel gypped. Petition to make this gender neutral teachings so I, and others like me, don’t make fools of themselves in the future.”
“Well, clearly you’re one of only ones around here who’s got an idea of and appreciates what wit and my snark is, so I’ll keep you around. Name’s Cecily, snark connoisseur.”
"Tate, but I’m considering making ‘snark connoisseur’ my official title, maybe tattooing it on my arse for good measure.”
“Yeah, maybe. I just never have been that interested in it.”
“Any particular reason why?”
“More than I’m willing to admit.”
“That’s kind of impressive but also kind of really fucking weird.”
