Her laughter made something warm flare in his chest and he couldnât help smiling back.
âNotâŠnot that specifically, no. But curdling milk or cream in alcohol has a long history. People call them âdare shotsâ âŠas in, dare your drunk friends to drink one, see if you can gross them out. â
He beamed proudly and added, âWon myself five hundred dollars in college by downing two Brain Hemorrhages back to back, and not puking after. â
That particular shot entailed Irish cream curdled in peach schnapps, rendered 'bloodyâ by a splash of grenadine. It actually tasted pretty good, but the visuals and the texture were often too much for people.
Suddenly his mind caught up to his mouth; he was rambling again. There he was being needy, wanting her to look at him, at want to listen to all the stupid crap his ADHD churned up. Before he had time to dwell on it or let the insecuritiess get too loud, she was teasingly asking whether Captain Nash had changed his mind about her. That got an actual chuckle out of him.
âHis wife hates when he brings other women home, is the thing. And Athenaâs a cop, so you really donât wanna get on her bad side.â
Her question gave him pauseâgod, had her eyes always been that intensely-blue?âand he went back to peeling the label from the now-empty bottle.
âShe umâŠshe doesnât feel the same about me. She just wants to be friends, which, thatâs great, I loveâŠbeing friends with her, I ..I guess Iâm just jealous of whoeverâs going to win her heart, someday. Whoever he isâor she, or theyâI hope they treasure her. Sheâs reallyâŠreally something special, you know?â
Taylorâs eyebrows rose as Buck described the drink. It sounded... interesting. He seemed to have stories to tell and she loved listening. The way that he got lost in the memory of his experiences, even if they were just silly drinking dares between him and his past friends. She always wondered what Buck was like before life as a firefighter.Â
She was entirely invested and maybe a bit worried about that name, âBrain Hemorrhage? I probably shouldnât ask.â But she wanted to hear more. The excitement in his tone, the way that his head tilted as he recalled details, his eyebrow arching with pride and confidence, maybe a little arrogance in there too. But, it was the attractive kind, because she knew that he had a reason to be who and how he was. Did she just? Get it together, Taylor. Heâs talking about alcohol, for christâs sake.Â
âOh god, Iâve already pissed her off once.â She leaned back just enough to tuck hair behind her ear and toss the rest of her locks behind her shoulder. âI donât intend on getting on her bad side again.âÂ
Buck was... hesitating as he expressed his thoughts about the person his heart seemed set on. Taylor felt a ping in her heart, the way that he described his view of the situation. It sounded a lot like.... it couldnât be? Sheâd told him that she was glad to have him as a friend. He surely wasnât talking about her, right?Â
âMaybe sheâs... afraid for some reason. Youâre a great person. Youâre a lot of fun and your determination is admirable. You may not act appropriately- sometimes your tendency to be so impulsive can drive a girl crazy-â was she still talking about a theoretical person or herself? âMy point being, youâre someone that I personally wouldnât want to lose. Maybe sheâs afraid of it all going south and... she loses what could be the safest connection in her life?â Okay, that was a bit personal. Even for her own liking.Â
