Hey people, I figured I’d update you all on a few things since the UK and Chicago Tumblr Cons have been making announcements. Sorry we took that break last year at the end of July, I got really busy with some life stuff and lost sight of the objective. It really derailed our momentum, but we’ve been going at it since we came back in November and acquired some new team members and important connections. The LA Convention Center has been decided on for our location over Anaheim given it’s accessibility, nearby accommodations, and smaller scale. We have our business guy crunching the numbers as we speak and the content team burning the midnight oil to organize programming. We will start reaching out soon to companies and individuals, but we’re waiting to make any major announcements about dates till we have our schedule, starter funds, and some sponsors first, so stay tuned! I will say this though, we have several tumblr artists and musicians already on board that I will be announcing in the next day or so and a preliminary agreement with a current popular brand in entertainment(they will remain unnamed till finalized, but it’s good stuff) Now I’ve got to get back to work(these dogs won’t rescue themselves lol) Have a great day.

Tumblr Con venue update and programming!

We’ve been researching and evaluating venues for some time now, but we thought we’d update you! Depending on costs, Tumblr Con will be at LA or Anaheim Convention Center. I (Jeremy) have been to the LACC several times and I really like its layout, flexibility of exhibit spaces, and available parking. I will be looking over the Anaheim CC in the next day or so. In the end though it will be a balance between funding, cost, and features. As for programming, we will be working on locking down the schedule by the end of next week. If there are specific events, panels, or workshops you’d like to see, let us know and we’ll take them into consideration!

I second the Australia motion. Preferably somewhere in Queensland, where I can at least round up friends to roadtrip with, since I’m poor, and I can’t drive.

That could definitely be in the works. Our newest partner, who ideally will be handling the business side, is Australian. Obviously, as a US based planning team, US locations will be first, starting with LA and then New York. My friend and I who started working on this thing, are cliche tumblr friends. "Tumblr: Making friends who live no where near you" But definitely once it gets off the ground, we can take the format to other places.

The planning for this is ridiculous complicated. I was looking at the event planning guide for the LA Convention Center and my brain started to melt. There’s a reason event planning is a whole profession.

I(im-the-doctor-basically-run) live in LA, and this started as a reason to bring all of our internet friends together, the first one will be in LA or Anaheim depending on costs. Once we get the format down, we can easily partner up with people or companies and adapt it to other cities.

This morning I did a BASIC estimation for just an exhibit hall at the LACC. Based on a 2009 quoted price of $0.32/sq ft, JUST the exhibit hall floor for AX last year, would cost over $200K. Given that JUST the Homestuck Adventure Game kickstarter, raised almost 3MILLION DOLLARS for a 700k goal, with all the fandoms working together , it should be no problem.

You don't realize how much you take for granted the planning and effort that goes into any convention, until you start reading through a convention center's SEVENTY-FOUR PAGE event planning guide book full of licences and permits and regulations and procedures and building codes and exhibit spacing and booth occupancy limits per exit and on and on and on.

for the sake of curiosity

If someone (and maybe I will, I’m crazy enough) actually did set up a tumblrcon in LA with different rooms and panels for different fandoms and a lounge where people can mingle

who all would be interested in attending?

I’ve also been crazy enough for 5 months now(with a small break in between).

I don’t like the feel of the rooms idea that some people are having. Rooms are too exclusive and you would need a lot of them. Plus someone would be upset if their specific fandom didn’t get a room. I like the way an exhibit hall convention with booths and displays flows together nicely and you can freely move about. There are a lot of multifandom blogs out there, as is my personal one, so I think people would like the freedom. If people REALLY wanted rooms, I was already including either screening rooms for some fandoms, obviously not all, that would have multiple seasons to watch, or screening events for particular episodes or movies, maybe with a q&a or panel attached.
