Carol I frew up
Rewatching S2 and I stg I could write it essays about the thematic thought they put into this show for the first few seasons AGHHHH..
Thinking about how Shane had to wear Otis's clothes while they eulogized him, and he looked so stupid and out of place in these massive fuckin overalls. He looked like a clown, he was literally wearing his shame, the growing feeling of being ostracized by the group -- YESSSSS put that guy in the dead man's clothes (DEAD MAN WHO HE KILLED) he looks like an idiot, he feels like a monster, he is becoming something unrecognizable. 🙌
There's some sauce in there, I'm tellin you.
why is he like this 😭
Quick Review: Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater
I was skeptical going in, cozy fantasy and I have a rocky relationship but I found this book incredibly satisfying
Dora had far more emotion that she claimed and I felt connected to her internal and external journeys. I was invested in her growth and was very satisfied with her ending.
Her romance with Elias could have been flat and basic, but when their values aligned, I found their worldviews and personalities beautifully matched. I was able to like the romance so much more because of their growing respect they had for each other, not just fun banter.
Addressing poverty throughout the book and how it manifested in regency England really grounded the story and made it feel real, not some shallow depiction of a fairy tale that's merely all aesthetic.
I loved the homages to other fairy tales, like Dora's mother making a deal where the price is her child and the sleeping curse both harken back to Rumplestilskin and Sleeping Beauty, which added to the fairy tale Atwater weaves throughout.
Absolutely lovely prose and a great audiobook by Madeleine Leslay that had me wrapped up in Dora's story.
4/5 stars, I'm excited to read more of Atwater's work, particularly in this series. Highly recommended to romance and cozy fantasy fans.
Howl’s Moving Castle book reccs
WORN PAGE LIBRARY december book club pick. half a soul by olivia atwater.
“There is such a thing as evil in this world,” Elias told her quietly. “It does not help to look away from it. It does not even help, necessarily, to look at it.” His fingers brushed through her hair, and she shivered. “But sometimes, when you cannot force the world to come to its senses, you must settle only for wiping away some of the small evils in front of you.” — olivia atwater, half a soul
Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater is like if Pride & Prejudice and Howl’s Moving Castle had a lovely little regency baby
