Co-teach classroom
Thoughts? I'm subbing in a first grade co-teach classroom today. The teachers split up the curriculum. One teaches math and the other teaches language arts. I'm here for the LA teacher. Let's see how this is done...
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INANIMATE OBJECT?
Books <3
“Teaching as a profession has no mystery. It has no mystique. It has no respect. We were students, and therefore we know teachers. We denigrate teachers. We criticize teachers. We can do better than teachers. After all: We do. They teach. We are wrong. We need to honor teachers. We need to respect teachers. We need to listen to teachers. We need to stop reducing teachers to arbitrary measurements of student growth on so-called objective exams. Most of all, we need to stop thinking that we know anything about teaching merely by virtue of having once been students. We don’t know.”

Subbing in the second grade
Today I subbed in a second grade classroom. It was chaos. The first thing that happened was when I walked into the classroom and saw zero sub plans. First red flag. The second thing that I saw was a complete disorganized mess of a teacher’s desk.
These two experiences alone have reinforced some practices in my mind. The first being that as a teacher I will leave out supplies, books, and plans if I plan on being gone. The second thing I learned ties into the first. If I am ever gone on short notice, I will not leave my room looking like a disaster, making supplies, books, etc hard to find for my sub.
Kid stories:
It always brightens my day when a student comes up and compliments you. I like the warm-fuzzies. Today I was complimented on my books, my hair, and my freckles. If you ever need a self-esteem boost you should definitely go to an elementary classroom.
I had a student tell me that she likes the way I teach math better than her regular teacher. Again a warm-fuzzy that lets me know I’m on the right path.
