I’ll admit that when I first played chapter 5, my thought wasn’t that Kris felt like a third wheel to Suselle, so much as they were just. Exhausted. They’ve been up all night and for a good portion of that night without their soul which is physically taxing and then did a decent portion of the date with their friends before finally conking out.

And I don’t think these two ideas are mutually exclusive either! But it makes me think of the parallel in Rudy also trying to hide his physical weakness to support Susie and Noelle only to inadvertently ruin the moment for them because of that, and Kris observing this and their own shortcomings and spawning Flowery into existence as someone who laments how physically weak and useless and helpless he is and his own powerful statistics are actually fake.

So in addition to Toby’s own struggles with carpal tunnel in real life I think part of Kris’ pain is this feeling that they want to be there for Susie and Noelle but struggle to do so not just emotionally but physically as well. And it’s ironic because they did a good portion of that date with the two and conking out gave privacy for a really tender moment for their friends to have! At the same time this exhaustion means Kris can’t always participate in this dynamic with their friends so even if they know their friends aren’t excluding them, Kris knows their body is and so they still feel left out.
