Castiel had always been observant. Dean said he'd been like that since he first met him, and you weren't surprised. It's not like he watched you when you sleep or anything, but he did notice the little things.
One day, you decided to cut your hair. Sam and Dean didn't realize it until you brought it up a couple of days later, but Castiel had as soon as you'd walked out of the bathroom. He'd taken one look at you and asked, "Why did you cut your hair?"
"It was getting too long," you said, with a dismissive shrug. "I needed to trim it." What you didn't say was that it was starting to look ratty, far too long, and you wanted it to look good.
Castiel looked at you for a moment more and murmured, "I liked it long," before nodding, and then the conversation was over.
Another day, you'd started to see a little more fat around your midsection than usual, and so you began to go on Sam's morning runs with him. You needed to get back in shape, not only for hunting, and the stamina it required, but also because you didn't like the way you looked. You didn't think Castiel would like the way you looked.
You had woken up early to leave with Sam, and felt the bed jostle slightly after you had already sat up, meaning that Castiel had woken. You turned to look at him and smiled at the sight of his squinty, tired eyes looking you over.
"Go back to bed," you said, and he propped himself up on his elbow.
"You don't need to lose weight," he said suddenly, his voice still thick with sleep.
You stopped in the midst of pulling a sock over your foot and turned completely to look at him. You could feel your cheeks heating up slightly, but tried to ignore the feeling. "What? I..." You faltered, lost for words.
He slid across the bed and pressed a soft kiss to your belly, where there was a little bit of squish. "You don't need to change. Come back to bed."
You decided to stay in that morning.
A few months later, you had just arrived in Naperville, Illinois, and were about to investigate four disappearances within one neighborhood. While Dean went to get food and Sam researched beforehand, you put on what little makeup you had in the bathroom. You'd found that you got a better reception from victims or victims' families when you looked better.
Castiel stepped into the already-tight space behind you and wrapped his arms around your waist, resting his chin on your shoulder and watching you curiously. "Why are you applying makeup, Y/N?" he asked, after a few moments of silence.
"I want them to like me," you answered absently, brushing a little blush onto your cheeks.
"Why wouldn't they like you?"
You blinked and looked away from your face to focus on his. "That's not what I mean."
"They like me better when I look pretty," you said.
You rolled your eyes and continued your routine.
"You don't have to try to be pretty," he said, looking confused. "You're beautiful. Your soul is beautiful. You don't have to try at all."
Your cheeks darkened, and not because of the blush you'd been applying. You had turned and wrapped your arms around his shoulders in seconds, and brushed your lips against his. "Thank you."
Castiel held you for a second before pulling away and turning you back toward the mirror. "Look. Don't you like you?" He put a gentle hand on your shoulder. "I like you."
You looked up at him and, upon seeing the honesty reflected in his eyes, washed the makeup off. Maybe you would stop trying so hard.
