What’s in Sarah Dessen’s bag? 

What does a #1 New York Times bestselling author of 12 novels pack in her purse? To celebrate of her newest novel, Saint Anything, coming out and stealing our hearts, we asked Sarah Dessen to spill her purse and share with us what she keeps in her bag! 

1. Entirely too many lip products. I have a bit of a sickness when it comes to liners and glosses: I cannot NOT buy one if I think it will become my Signature Look. (Note: it never does. That is ever elusive, like Bigfoot.) The result is all of these very similar colors rolling around my purse, usually just out of my reach. 

2. Lens cleaner packets. Okay, go ahead and laugh. But what is nicer than a fresh, clean phone or tablet screen? I’ll tell you: nothing. I buy these in bulk and keep them anywhere. In a pinch, they can also clean your hands. I have been known to hand them out to strangers on planes and in line at the bank, just to share the love. Yeah, I get some looks. 

3. Breath products. Again, there is no perfect one. But Sweet Breath comes pretty close. I buy it in huge packs online, and it has everything you need in a breath freshener: portable, good tasting and JUST strong enough to make you wince and choke a little bit. 

4. Crossword Puzzle app. This is a new one for me, as I heard that they help with memory, and mine is just awful, especially when I get stressed out. Also, this particular app give you cheats and hints, which I desperately need to come even close to finishing. 

5. Lollipops. My new book, Saint Anything, had a lot of lollipops in them, and they always have them at my bank. I like to grab a few every time, just for good luck. 

6. Various children’s toys. I have a seven year old daughter, so I’m always carrying something of hers so she doesn’t lose it. Often it’s a half eaten sticky lollipop, so the toys are actually preferable. 

7. Blank book. And it IS blank, because no matter how many of these I buy (a lot) I never actually use them. I have this romantic notion that I will, however, and you can’t put a price on that. I hope.

You can bring your books to get signed however, we strongly encourage you to purchase books at the library. Books of Wonder, our fantastic local independent bookstore will be on hand to sell books. We hope you can make it!

The lineup for May 26 looks awesome!! I have a few questions though. If we want to buy books to support the authors we'll be meeting, are there books sold on site at the library or at another area? Also, do we need to be affiliated with BEA? I know there's a free admission, but do we need to bring anything else with us besides books? Thank you! I'm hoping I can make it! :)

Hi! Books will be available for purchase from our local independent bookstore, Books of Wonder! It'll be the author's most recent title. We'll release a full list of titles that will be available for purchase soon so you can plan ahead. And yes, it's a free event! Open to the general public. You don't need to be affiliated with BEA in any way. We hope you can make it. Bring everyone you know!

Q&A with CARA LYNN SHULTZ

Q: Why do you read/write YA?

Everything is heightened when you're a teen. Your characters feel

things so much more deeply—simply because it's the first time they're

having these feelings. It's a time of discovery — not only of the

world, but of yourself. Besides, adults are way too jaded. Could you

see a thirty-year-old believing the man she just met is a demonslayer?

Nope, she'd think he was a serial killer, and the book would end at

page 30.

Q: If you had a superpower what would it be?

Flight! I just returned from a wedding in Mexico and if I could

somehow avoid being cramped in a middle seat on an international

flight again, that would be okay with me!

Q: If you were deserted on an island and only had one book with you,

what would it be?

Les Miserables. While I do love the story, it's also one of the

longest books ever written — well, according to Wikipedia — and I'm

looking to maximize my impact here. Also, since it's a deserted

island, no one will complain if I start singing "Castle on a Cloud" at

the top of my lungs.

Q: If you were stuck in an elevator with only one other writer, who would it be?

Helen Fielding. I had the pleasure of meeting her once, and she's as

delightful as you'd think. Also, I'd love some real-life Colin Firth

stories.

Q: One book you wish you had written?

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

Q: Why do you read/write YA?

Because I'm still a teen at heart (plus, that's when you have so many

firsts--loves, heartbreak--right when you're trying to figure out the kind

of person you want to be).

Q: If you had a superpower what would it be?

Flying! It would save so much time. Or the ability to attract only good guys!

Q: If you were deserted on an island and only had one book with you, what would it be?

Have they found a way to bind the entire Harry Potter series into one book?
