Things had not been going great lately. First of all, there were the bloody messages left on his father’s windows, which the man refused to take seriously. Cooper had tried to talk some sense into him, get him to leave town for a bit, but that had gotten him nowhere. Second, his plans to take over the company were not moving along as smoothly as he had hoped. Of course, he had not expected things to be easy, but this was ridiculous. This scare had his father’s grip on the company tighter than ever, and it was becoming a serious pain in his ass.
He was contemplating his next move over a beer when a knock came at his door. Not expecting any company, Cooper ignored it at first. But then came another knock, and he decided to get up to check it anyway. Turns out that was a good, thing, since he found Mykie standing at the door, armed with their favourite liquor. Nice.
“Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in,” Cooper grinned, leaning up against the door frame. The smile from his face faded when Mykie said that there was some weirdo watching her, at which point he ushered her inside and closed the door.
Cooper peered out the window next to the door, but he was unable to get a good look at the man. There was nothing that stood out to him to tell him who it was, but that didn’t mean much. “It’s probably just some lowlife from the Harris Report or something like that,” Cooper said, closing the door behind Mykie. “Still…” he locked the door with a decisive click.
Leading Mykie into the living room, Cooper dropped onto the sofa. Looking up at his red-haired friend, he raised an eyebrow. “To what do I owe the pleasure? I distinctly remember that you were supposed to be working tonight, so what gives?”
It took Cooper longer to open the door than she’d hoped butwhen he did, he had a smile on his face, greeting her. The smile quickly fadedwhen he heard about the creepy dude in the car though and he ushered her inside. She watched him as he peeked out of the little window by the door, nodding ashe commented that it was probably someone from the Harris Report. That was hersuspicion too. “I think so,” she replied quietly, feeling for some reason thatshe shouldn’t be too loud about it. One of those weird unnecessary whispermoments. He locked the door for good measure though before heading to theliving room to plop onto the couch.
She eyed him for a moment. He didn’t look too worse for wear, which was good. She set the bottles she’d brought down on the coffee table in front of him ashe asked why she was there, pointing out that she was supposed to be at work. She laughed softly as she moved to perch on the couch next to him, opening oneof the bottles before sitting back. “Yeahhh… I decided I needed a drinkprobably about as badly as you did and what better company to have it in,” sheanswered as she made herself comfortable, slipping off her heels before pullingher legs up under her.
Taking a long swig from the bottle, she grimaced slightly as it burned down herthroat and into her chest. “I got someone to cover,” she added, holding out thebottle to him. “Figured you were laying low after all the chatter and that itmight be nice to do the same. Though now, in light of the creepo out front, Ifear I might have stirred the pot by showing up.” She shifted to face him abit. “I can see the headlines now, ‘Cooper’s secret super-hot, red-headed lovershows up to soothe his pain in midst of scandal’” she teased, with a chuckle.
