I had a thought

James somehow forgets regulus was named after the star and just think his name means star so he decided to buy a star and name it after his lover

His lover tells him that regulus was already a star so they began to call the new star regulus squared

In 1979 the star James bought burnt out so both of james’ regulus’ were gone
