I love that Tau so far is a shithole..... the Colonization Machines, who utilize caste-based society and believe in their inherent supremacy over all other beings, suck just as bad as the piece of shit empire that created them.

The Old Peace made me think that they were going to retcon all of the nasty behavior before, but the context from Constellations and now the Tau demo have made it clearer that the Old Peace Sentients were a splinter group caught between a rock (wider Sentient society) and a hard place (the Orokin), and considered the Orokin, of all people, the lesser evil. not to mention the (manufactured) conflict between the Old Peace Sentients and the Anarchs (as in, Dax and Grineer similarly exploited by the Orokin) while the Golden Lords sat back and laughed and pulled their strings.

Sentient society is just like Corpus society and Grineer society: crushed under Orokin boots and yearning to escape that by wearing the boot themselves, not by throwing off the yolk of what created them and shaped them (and so the Corpus exploit and exploit and remain haunted by a man who coveted what the Orokin had; and so the Grineer dominate and dominate and remain subordinated by Orokin ghosts living within Grineer forms). just like the Man in the Wall, absorbing all of the miserable cruelty of the world and vomiting it back up and lashing out at all beings because some beings mutilated it and used those parts of itself to multiply that cruelty. copies and duplicates and mirrors and doppelgangers all the way down, still haunted by an empire that's been dead for an age

Not to start something during Disability Pride Month but I just saw someone vehemently reject Y'shtola's blindness as a disability because it's not really disabling her in any way (i.e. she can still see), but... she can't? Like, she asked Urianger to describe the night sky to her in that cutscene after you clear the Qitana Ravel because she can no longer see it for herself. I felt like that very clearly cemented how she might be able to see but it was more like seeing the aetheric outline or volume of things or whatever and not actual full normal vision.

I was really surprised to see the level of vehemence that person had about the topic, so now I'm wondering if it's a hotly contested topic in the FFXIV fandom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think about it ALL. THE. TIME. but I avoided saying it in the past because I was worried about being misinterpreted as nonbinaryphobic BUT I can say it now cus im nonbinary and always talk about liking GOOD nonbinary rep. But I always HATED how nonbinary rep in so much stuff felt like an excuse to avoid having canon binary trans characters in media.

As in, lots of shows and stuff can have a "nonbinary" character who never gets to have their gender explored or be dysphoric or be EXPLICITLY nonbinary outside of a couple blink and you'll miss it uses of they/them pronouns, so its easy for viewers to just assume theyre a girl or boy and move on. And I really felt like this treatment was cus you cant show a transgender boy or a transgender girl EXPLICITLY without being frank about how they were assigned one gender and decided they were a different one, like just the ACT of transition (social or medical) is too much for cis people to stomach being shown. I dont want half-assed nonbinary rep as one single character in a whole cast of cis people.
