Brandon Sanderson is interesting because in the majority of his body of work (especially his main cosmere universe) he kind of sits down across from you and says,
"Listen, even if an omniscient God or a godlike being is real, most religions are built on only a bit of truth and mostly upon myths designed to keep order among the populace. This order creates, designs, and enforces rigid roles for racism, classism, sexism, and homophobia. It excuses and handwaves, if not outright encourages, colonialism and oppression."
and you're like "Mr. Sanderson, aren't you a card carrying member of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints?"
and he's like "don't worry about that"

i do find the rules around clothes fascinating because of how made up it all is. we invented the idea of covering our bodies from the elements because we lack fur like other mammals and then made up all these rules around it and now people will unironically tell you "men cant wear skirts its unnatural" girl none of this is natural. we are born naked and made up the rest as we went along. hope this helps.
A wild thing that keeps happening to me as an autistic adult who read wayyyy too many books as a child is how often I am reminded that some people were actually fed the propaganda so many of my books warned about, but I was just too antisocial to be around the propaganda and only learned about it in books
Ok but I don't think enough people understand the amazing elegance that you find in the systems in theater tech
Both the physical systems and the more conceptual systems that are used
First the physical systems, specifically sound systems. Basically nothing is proprietary, I mean some digital control systems have proprietary things but even those are often just slight modifications to existing standards. Analog audio though, everything can adapt to everything, and like 90% of the time completely passively. And this isn't just important for interoperability between brands; so often when things break during critical times the first fix that can be done involves some frankly ridiculous chains of adaptors because that was what was available and time is often a huge factor. And equipment reliability is a key feature while also (usually) not over engineering things.
Lights are also incredibly standardized to the point that with a couple adapters almost any equipment can work with any other.
Second is the less physical systems that are used, things like the way events are planned, how it is decided what equipment to take on a tour, and just the general mentality that is quite common in this work.
These are not quite as universal as the physical equipment but they are still incredibly common to find in theaters or other live av work; most likely due to how advantageous they are to have for this. You will almost always find that a theater has some kind of backup for any critical equipment, small stuff like cables this is just having a second of the item, and for more expensive things like control boards this often is just the old one that the current board replaced. And often with the smaller items it may not even be one of everything that is critical and instead just an assortment of adaptors that will allow a temporary fix in an emergency until the broken item can be replaced.
The phrase "the show must go on" really summarizes this entire mentality exceptionally, when you are running live events there is no tomorrow there is no "fix it in post", it needs to work now and so you have to set yourself up for success ahead of time and be adaptable in the moment. And there is something beautiful about that because it drives some of the most amazing creativity and yet at its best almost no one knows it ever existed. A common phrase in this work is "the best tech is the one the audience never notices" and I just want to give some appreciation for the work and creativity from anyone who does this, from middle school and high school theater students, to professionals that have decades of experience.
ok, I hate how few posts are about what fitz needs. Because he’s a teen still, his frontal lobe isn’t developed, he’s going to make stupid decisions and a lot of mistakes. and he won’t stop unless someone tries to help him. That’s why Sophie won’t be good for Fitz or the other way around. Sophie is too sweet for him, she’s strong willed but not for him. She can’t tell him when he’s going too far or when she’s unhappy with him. At least not easily or in a way he’d understand.
He needs someone who’s not afraid to smack him if he says something stupid, mean, or prejudiced. Someone who can understand his issues but also tell him to buck up and grow a pair. And Sophie just won’t be able to do that. Fitz needs someone who can be as kind as Linh AND as strong as Marella, obviously not them though. He doesn’t deserve either of them. But still, he needs someone who can get a spray bottle and spray him with water when he’s being a bitch. But who can also comfort him when he’s in pain.
Sooo……..like Dex?
that’s an interesting concept. And the angst would be awesome. Cause Fitz totally seems like the guy to have internalized homophobia. He doesn’t mean to but he can’t help it. The elven world isn’t exactly known for its inclusivity. And I bet Dex could totally put him in his place if he needs to.
It would also be in character for dex to dislike Fitz so much in the first few books-- especially with how much Sophie obviously has a crush on him-- if he was trying to hide a crush of his own

Keeper of the Lost cities is a really good alagory for our current political climate in the usa
Obviously there is the easy connection of the neverseen to fascists, but that's not actually what I find most interesting
The council is such a good representation of neoliberal politicians, they are more worried about keeping the peace -even if it is a false peace- than they are with actually fixing problems.
And then the black swan are the people actively trying to fight the fascism, except one of the big issues with fighting fascists is they have no issues escalating and don't have the moral qualms about hurting people that the black swan does.
As much as it sucks sometimes you need people who are actually capable of fighting back while also not compromising on their beliefs of trying to help others. The black swan seemed to realize this, hence the whole project moonlark thing, but now they seem at the least nervous and at the most straight up resistant to letting Sophie and her friends actually help. (And like it makes sense, they seemed like they were planning on letting her become an adult before leaving the humans, and now all the sudden they have a child soldier thing on their hands)
Sophie bringing Keefe, Dex and Biana to try out veggie burgers.
The entire moment that sold me on team keefe-foster was when keefe decides he is ok with sofitz because it makes Sophie happy and that's all he wants for her.
